Takeda had extensive training in several martial arts (including Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū and sumo ) and referred to the style he taught as "Daitō-ryū" (literally, "Great Eastern School"). Although the school's traditions claim to extend back centuries in Japanese history there are no known extant records regarding the ryū before Takeda. Whether he is regarded as the restorer or founder of the art, the known history of Daitō-ryū begins with Takeda Sokaku.

Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu, Tokyo, Japan
Little is known about Daito Ryu Aiki Ju jutsu in the West. Even in Japan, it has long been considered a relic of a pre war era, at best the poor cousin of its modern day cognate Aikido, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Daito Ryu has always been a conservative and some what secretive martial art. Its most famous exponent Takeda Sokaku only ever taught people of high social standing such as politicians, teachers, police or military people. Before that the art belonged exclusively to the Aizu clan in Japan and was never allowed to be shown to outsiders. Takeda was probably one of the last true warriors. At the turn of the last century, he spent his time roaming Japan, taking on challengers and perfecting his sword and Ju Jutsu techniques against any one foolish enough to take him on. Although only 5ft tall he was feared and respected as a great Martial artist and continued to travel around Japan teaching and spreading Daito Ryu well into his 80s.
Although very small and hard to find, Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu has remained remarkably intact, since Takeda Sokaku Sensei started disemminating the art through out Japan at the turn of the century. Periodically put on hold during the Second World War, the art in its original form is still very much alive in a small industrial suburb in the outskirts of Tokyo.

An Overview History of Daito Ryu Aikijutsu By Scott Shaw Daito Ryu was the primary influence for the formation of Hapkido. Therefore, the history of Daito Ryu is an essential element to understanding the birth of Hapkido. The systems of martial arts which were developed in Japan have been driven to the forefront of modern understanding primarily at the hands of the media. Certainly, the acts of the Kamikaze pilots of World War II will live throughout history in infamy. But, it is no doubt the stylings of the Japanese Samurai Swordsmen as have been depicted in an untold number of televisions programs and movies, that has etched the image of the Japanese martial arts onto the minds of the masses. Though little is written about the initial formation of martial culture in Japan, this nation historically traces the foundations of its martial arts to early contact with Korea and China. From these ancient contacts, and the influences provided by these two cultures, Japan set about on a course of taking what it had learned, redefining this knowledge, and then developing its own systems of self defense which more exactly emulate Japanese society. This was a long process, beginning in appropriately the fifth century B.C.E., and continuing forward until Samurai culture firmly took hold during the eleventh and twentieth centuries of the common era.

The feudal system was broken down after 1868 when the Meiji restoration begun. Saigo, Tanomo (1829-1905), the heir to Daito-ryu gave the system to Takeda, Sogaku (1859-1943) and instructed him to pass it on to future generations. Takeda, Sogaku first used the term "Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu" in the beginning of the twentieth century and taught the art of it to many students. Takeda, Sogaku taught Daito-ryu from the beginning of the twentieth century until his death in 1943 two of his best known students were Ueshiba, Morihei, founder of Aikido and Choi, Yong Sul, founder of Hapkido.

17. Aikido & Aikibujutsu - History
The purpose of this art (daito ryu) is not to be killed, Morihei trained and taught daito ryu Aikijujutsu diligently during the years prior to WWII
http://www.aiki-buken.com/history.html
Aikido's fundamental principle is to blend with an opponent's movement and energy, controlling their physical center while protecting one's own center against reversals. One never fights strength and aggression with the same, but rather relies on more refined techniques and methods, such as taisabaki (body movement), kansetsuwaza (joint locks), kuzushiwaza (off balancing methods), nagewaza (throws), osaewaza (controlling techniques), kyusho no jutsu (vital point attacks) and of course, aiki (blending of movement and energy) to effortlessly redirect, neutralize, or control an opponent's attack. Obata SoShihan's aikido stems from the techniques of Shioda Gozo Kancho, as they were handed down to him by Ueshiba Morihei, aikido's founder (pictured left - this picture was taken during the time that Ueshiba sensei was still teaching Daito ryu Aikijujutsu). Shioda learned aikido (referred to as "aikibudo" during his earlier years of training) during the pre-war era before WWII. However, Morihei's deep involvment in the esoteric Omoto-kyo of religion and his varied experience later seriously altered the art into something more philosophical minded (and less practical minded) - an approach the Yoshinkan branch did not subscribe to. The late Shioda Gozo Kancho (pictured right) of the Yoshinkan dojo occupied a prominent place in the Japanese martial arts community.

The Great Sokaku Takeda Master of Daito ryu Aikijujitsu
Sokaku Takeda Sokaku Takeda , who revived Daitoryu Aiki jujitsu , was born in 1860 in the town of Aizu Sakashita in Fukushima prefecture.  Sokaku Takeda was the 35th Grand Master of the Daitoryu tradition that had stemmed from Kunitsugu Takeda.  Sokaku Takeda, was always carrying around his kendo equipment, on visits to different fencing schools.  Sokaku Takeda , then head of the family, began to teach the art outside the Takeda household, travelling widely throughout the recently unified Japan and finally settling in Hokkaido.  Sokaku Takeda had also studied other martial arts and he incorporated his knowledge of these plus his practical experience into the Daitoryu which he taught to select groups of military officers, police officials and aristocrats.
