Cross Country Skiing in Northwest Wisconsin
Northwest Wisconsin is a region rich in Nordic skiing tradition and history and blessed with some of the best cross country ski trails in the country. Not only are there literally hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails, but they represent a wide range of family-oriented to athletically challenging experiences in a setting of incredible natural beauty. With the region’s strong Scandinavian heritage, it was only natural that Nordic skiing took root in northwest Wisconsin. Farmers, loggers and settlers of Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish extraction used cross country skis for work and recreation dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. Much of the area’s "modern" Nordic skiing heritage can be attributed to the late Tony Wise and the development of Telemark Resort in Cable. Wise was one of those larger than life characters whose accomplishments helped elevate cross country skiing to a much higher level of awareness in the Midwest and perhaps the country. He was the former owner of Telemark Resort which became one of the first downhill ski areas in the Midwest in 1947. As such, it quickly became a hot spot for winter sports in the area. Wise recognized the potential for cross country skiing at Telemark; a system of trails was laid out and Telemark began to make its mark in the world of cross country skiing. NEWS Breaking News

Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing on groomed trails is a favorite winter sport in Utah. In addition, Utah has hundreds of roads and trails in its National Forests and on BLM land which are ideal for cross-country skiing. There are mountain top routes, tracks through snow-dusted red rock, historic trails... even some of our snowed-in golf courses get into the act. Backcountry skiers should be well-prepared, and should check weather and avalanche forecasts prior to setting out. Many agree that Utah's backcountry is some of the most accessible and has the best snow.

Special Olympics Japan athlete Yoshikazu Niguchi, 17, clinched a gold medal in the 3K cross country finals at the 2005 World Winter Games. Higuchi was evacuated from his home when his village was hit hard by an earthquake in October 2004, and couldn't train for two months because his coach's house had been destroyed. Higuchi said the experience made him feel even more strongly that he wanted to bring a gold medal back home to make people around him happy. [Photo by Kishimoto] Cross Country Skiing is a winter sport which promotes superior physical conditioning while providing enjoyment for athletes of all ages. Special Olympics cross country skiing events are designed to be appropriate for athletes of every ability level.
