    History
As a competitive sport, cross-country running began in England with a game called "hare and hounds" or "the paper chase" in the early 19th century. In this game, a runner or group of runners laid a trail by dropping pieces of paper or other markers while following a random course, and a second set of runners then set out in pursuit, trying to follow the paper trail. The first formal competition was the Crick Run, first held at Rugby School in 1837. Many other public schools soon established similar events, followed by Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Although hare and hounds continued to be popular at schools, in important competition the game became a cross-country race along a course laid out in advance over open country. The English national cross-country championship was established in 1876. Two years later, William C. Vosburgh of New York introduced the sport to the United States. In 1887, the National Cross-Country Association was founded, and the association held its first championship event. The Amateur Athletic Association began conducting the national championship in 1880. Also in 1880, cross-country running was introduced at Harvard as an autumn training event for track and field distance runners, and other colleges quickly followed Harvard's example.

by Hal Higdon They call it "shagging out," or "The Shag." It happens mostly in high school cross-country just before the start of races and (as near as I can determine) mostly in northwestern Indiana, where I live. The Shag is practiced at meets like the New Prairie Invitational, which each September attracts approximately 2,000 competitors from 90 different schools. New Prairie offers eight separate races, all of which begin with runners shagging out. As a result, The Shag exists as a ritual, a ceremonial opening statement, a taste of more to come. It's like at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway several hours south, where they say, "Gentlemen, start your engines," after singing, "Back Home in Indiana." When I was coaching cross-country for the local high school a decade ago, I used to love being part of The Shag. I still enjoy watching it. Here's how it works: A few minutes before the start of each race, the runners stand nervously on line in pre-assigned boxes, awaiting instructions. The starter, starting pistol in one hand, stands atop a ladder glaring down at them. Their coaches hover anywhere from 50-to-100 meters before the line. Several hundred meters further away, spectators wait cordoned behind ropes for The Shag to signal that the race is about to begin.
"Shag out!" the starter finally commands.

The last two meets, instead of running a lot before the meet, the kids want to play "duck duck goose" or better yet, have changed it to our mascot panthers. "Panther, Panther, Pirate" - not sure where the pirate came in at though...didn't ask. :-)
This allows the runners to continue warming up after going through the course once before the race. It also entertains them. Our meets are on Wed. so it is hard to vary the practices. Usually Mon/Fri are our harder days. The other two days we "lightly" jog as the kids put it. A few weeks ago we had a ton of rain, and the kids were wanting to run the high school course (we are on the same campus). Although it was very muddy the kids ran the course all three days in the rain. For fun the kids "fell" in to the creek, a few times.
The HS course is very interesting...you go through two tunnels "lange's tunnel" then into the open field near the football practice field, into "Panther Island" a little jaunt into the woods (you cross a man-made bridge into the woods) and of course cross back out..up the "Dam Hill" around the pond, and down the "Other Dam Hill" up through "Sunflower Lane" and out to the finish shoot. The course is interesting...needless to say the kids were muddy everyday at practice...I have still managed to keep all 19 runners that started with me, with the exception of some "grades"...

    Cross-country running,
Cross-country running, a popular intramural diversion at Princeton as early as 1880 when the Hare and Hounds Club was founded, began auspiciously as a varsity sport in 1899 with John Cregan 1899 winning the first intercollegiate championship meet ever held. Fitting sequels to Cregan's notable achievement came in 1914, when Donald Morrison '15 finished second in the IC4A Championships, and again after the First World War, when Princeton teams placed second in the Intercollegiates in 1919, 1920, and 1921, and won the first triangular meet with Harvard and Yale in 1922. In the thirties, Bill Bonthron '34 excelled, going undefeated his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. He and his classmate Charles M. Reed finished arm-in-arm in a first place tie in every dual meet their sophomore year. The 1937 team was undefeated and won the Big Three meet, in which its captain Frederic Rosengarten '38 placed first. After the interruption of World War II, Princeton cross-country reached a high point when the 1949 team went undefeated in dual meet competition, took the Big Three championship, and placed second in the Heptagonal cross-country championship meet.* That year's captain, Stan Johnson '50, won the triangular meet with Harvard and Yale for the third time in his varsity career. In the 1950s six Princeton harriers came in first in Big Three meets: Dick Snedeker '51 (1950), Al Pittis 52 (1951), Toby Maxwell '53 (1952), Jack Vodrey '57 (1954), Rod Zwirner '59 (1956), and Mike Kingston '62 (1959). Maxwell (who placed first in every dual meet his senior year) and Vodrey were second in the Heptagonals. Most successful of all was Zwirner, who as a sophomore won every dual meet and was also individual champion in the Heptagonals.

So I'm finally here at Disney World with Hanover Cross Country team. We've been looking forward to this all season and I can't wait for the meet and the parks and restaurants. We took a plane down here today and I'm not much of a flyer but the plane ride was fine. Some of the team listened to music and did homework, especially since we're missing a day and a half of class. The trip is totally worth it though. Disney World or class? I pick Disney World! When we got here, our team split up and went to Downtown Disney to eat dinner because we were super hungry after our three-hour plane ride. It was fun seeing all the Disney characters around that I haven't seen since I was really little. I can't wait for tomorrow when we get to see the course! I heard that it was really flat and we'll get super fast times.

    Distance running injuries
Train yourself to stay free of distance running injuries
Running injuries when training are generally associated with high volumes and rapid changes in intensity. Too many athletes fall into the trap of overtraining and not taking sufficient rest. As a direct result of this, the bones, joints and muscles in the legs and lower back are stressed and this causes damage. Thus a recovery period must follow the training. During the recovery, the damage is repaired. In time, regular training combined with adequate rest results in what is called 'supercompensation'. With supercompensation, the body responds to the stress by growing stronger. This happens to all the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Once stronger, the bones and joints can handle greater stress, absorb more shock, and the muscles can act more efficiently. However, if you continue with high mileage training day after day, there is never sufficient recovery. In time, instead of growing stronger, your body becomes permanently weakened and running injuries occur as a result.

This event consists of a cross-country race conducted on an uneven terrain or on a public road and over a distance of 3 km (3,000 m) for both men and women. Completing this course within 10 minutes and zero seconds for men, and within 11 minutes and 20 seconds for women adds 1,000 points to the overall score of the athlete. The starting order of the running event is arranged based on the handicap system, according to which the score of the athletes after the first four Pentathlon sports is totalled up, and the differences in their standings are converted into different starting times. This procedure is followed because the order in which the athletes finish is also the final standing in the competition. This handicap starting system was adopted for two main reasons.
