Cross country running as an organized sport originates from England . The sport originated under the guidance of Coach Lewis Daniels. In the early 1800s cross country was practiced in public schools . In 1851, undergraduates at Exeter College, Oxford organised a foot grind . This was an analogy with steeple chasing on horse where a race would be held towards the nearest church steeple, forcing riders to clear rural obstacles such as hedges, fences, and ditches. A two-mile cross country steeplechase formed part of the Oxford University sports (in which many of the modern athletics events were founded) in 1860, but replaced in 1865 by an event over barriers on a flat fields, which became the modern

Cross country running tips: long-distance runners can learn about exercise, injury prevention, and food tips.
Cross-Country is a sport at many Junior and Senior High Schools. These athletes run between two and five miles per day, depending on the coach. In this article you will find many ideas for choosing equipment or gear, preventing injuries, helping stamina, and also many good food ideas that help to give the runner energy. What kind of shoes should I buy for long distance running? The best shoe for any long-distance sport is the lightest running shoe with the most support for the weight. Many coaches suggest Saucony running shoes, but there are many brands. You want a very light shoe that has built-in support for the arches. When you go shopping, check the weight of the shoes very carefully. Many runners also like to have spikes for rough terrain. There are both the screw-in kind and the permanent. This depends on the level and age of the runner. Again, check with your coach. How do I prevent shin splints?

The number of entries though lower than many previous years, comprised of a happy mix of local residents, visitors and Guernsey based runners. With fantastic weather and excellent island hall facilities the atmosphere was made both friendly and enjoyable. Sark 10
After a seven minute course briefing the race was started at noon by local fire officer Alan Blythe. 43 eager competitors set off, five of whom elected to run a shorter 5k course. The Sark 10 is open only to competitors over the age of 17 and so the 5k is an option for those wishing to take part but who are not yet eligible by age or who may for other reasons wish to run a shorter distance. Within minutes the two leaders, Mike Doyle and Steve Dawes were striding away from the rest of the pack with Pete Wickens, Bromwyn Rogers and Ian Ozanne close behind. Meanwhile, the 5k runners had separated and were starting to create their own battles. David Holmes had taken the lead but close behind and intent on not letting Holmes go was the much younger William Bodkin. Holmes, the Island Games senior triathlete hopeful, had to make what was his third pace injection well after the half way point to finally put some distance between himself and the 15 year old Bodkin who eventually finished 2nd just 17 seconds behind Holmes in a superb time of 17:13. Sarah Mercier and Sally Lamb finished the 5k in third and fifth places respectively whilst Andy Walker took fourth spot. The 5k winning time by Holmes was 16:56.

Whitman rosters Whitman schedule
News release date: Monday, Aug. 27, 2007
Whitman Cross Country Teams Poised to Take Run at NWC Elite
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – With a new season looming, the Whitman College men’s and women’s cross country teams are both poised to take a run at the upper half of the Northwest Conference rankings. On the women’s side, Whitman returns five of its top six finishers from last year’s conference championship race, where the Missionaries placed sixth in the team scoring – but just 11 points out of the third spot. "If our women’s team develops as we hope, we could place in the top three at conference and in the top four or five at regionals," third-year coach Malcolm Dunn says. The Missionary men’s squad also returns five of its top six from the 2006 conference finals, where it also placed a strong sixth. Whitman missed fifth by a meager five points and fourth by 17 points. "Our men’s team in particular has had an infusion of good talent in the freshman class," Dunn says. "There’s no question we could place a few spots higher in conference and move up at regionals as well." Both Whitman squads make their debut this Saturday, Sept. 1, when they host the annual Whitman Invitational at Ft. Walla Walla Park. The women’s 4,000-meter race starts at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men’s 6,000-meter race at 11:15 a.m.
