It seems that the origin of this game is found in the game of "mail" (as in "hammer" in old French) played in the French countryside during the middle-ages. Borrowed by the British during the 14th century, the modern game was apparently invented in Ireland in the , influenced by cricket , and as a distant cousin of golf and taken to England as a pastime of the aristocracy in the , and by the to its colonies. It may have evolved from the earlier mallet and ball game pall mall Croquet made its way to Canada , the United States Australia New Zealand and France , and while never hugely popular has continued to maintain a substantial following.

Glossary Alive: In American play, a ball which has cleared a wicket but has not roqueted another ball is alive on that ball. A striker becomes dead on a ball as soon as it hits it and receives a croquet shot and a continuation shot. If the strikers ball is dead on another ball and roquets that ball before deadness is cleared, the balls are replaced to their positions before the shot was made and the turn ends. In the British game, all balls are alive at the start of each players turn. All-Around Break: Running all the wickets in one turn. Angle of Divergence: Angle at which balls part when a croquet shot is made. (see: Newtonian Physics). Angle of Split: On a croquet shot, the angle between two lines, along which the two balls travel. see: Geometry). Apple: The name of the company that manufactured the machine the author used to write this book. Also, the object that fell on Newtons head that began his thinking on what has become known as Newtonian physics. An understanding of Newtonian physics is extremely helpful in understanding the movement of the balls as they are played during the game. Aunt Emma: A conservative player who wastes talent through dull and uninspired play. This player simply tries to advance from one wicket to the next.

History of Croquet
Mallet and ball games are thought to have been first played in England and Europe during the middle ages. Games would normally involve only one ball which would be struck through very wide hoops. A Croquet-like game is believed to have been first played by thirteenth century French peasants who used crudely fashioned mallets to whack wooden balls balls through hoops made of willow branches. In seventeenth and eighteenth century France, mallet and ball games were quite popular and one of them, "Paille Maille", was introduced to London where it was played in open ground near St. James's Palace. This area became known as Pall Mall which is how the famous street of today got its name.

The Rules of Croquet
Croquet has a reputation for being a genteel game for garden parties and picnics. Yet it can be a fiercely competitive game of skill and strategy for teams or individuals. Played on varying terrain and from two to six players it can provide fun and excitement at formal social occasions or to pleasantly while-away and afternoon. This site will take you through a comprehensive review of the rules and impart a bit of trivia on the game itself. To navigate this site, click on a specific topic in the contents below or click on the next page links at the bottom of each page to go through the site in the manner in which it was intended: The history of croquet has ancient roots. The setup for croquet is fairly simple, it requires only an open field and a croquet set comprised of two stakes, nine wickets, along with a couple of mallets and balls. The object of the game is to pass a ball through all the wickets. The basic rules of croquet are simple, but there are certain exceptions and caveats that are not well understood. There are many variations to the rules for croquet. We give you the flavor of a few.

History
Although croquet is a rather young sport, its ancestry can be traced at least to the 14th century, and there are a couple of stories about how it originated. One is that lawn bowlers developed an indoor form of their sport to be played during the winter, adding hoops and mallets to make the game more challenging on the much smaller playing area. This indoor version of lawn bowling then moved back outdoors and become known in France as paille-maille ("ball-mallet"). The other is that paille-maille was originally a form of outdoor billiards. However, judging by what scanty documentation there is, billiards seems to have come along about a century later. It's quite possible that the movement went the other waythat paille-maille moved indoors and become billiards. In any event, the sport existed for several centuries without becoming particularly popular. Scottish golfers seem to have taken it up, possibly as a kind of practice, during the 16th century and, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1604, he brought paille-maille equipment as well as golf clubs to his new court. Played during the 17th century by Charles II and his courtiers at St. James's Park in London, the name of the game was anglicized to Pall Mall, which also became the name of a nearby street. "Mall" then turned into a generic word for any street used for public strolls. And now, of course, it usually refers to an enclosed area where people stroll from store to store.
