€ Crickets are a group of insects related to grasshoppers and katydids. You can identify them from their long antennae (as long as their body or longer) and their large back legs, which they use for jumping or hopping. € Song of a cricket... The song of the field cricket is temperature dependent; the tone and tempo drop with the drop in temperature. Count the chirps in 13 seconds, add 40, and you will have the approximate temperature in degrees. Field Cricket
The Field Crickets
The field crickets are usually black in color, 1/2 to 1-1/4 inches long, and more robust than the house cricket. The rear wings are projected back beyond the front wings like pointed tails. Many of the species can only be separated on the basis of their song. They are the most common cricket found in pastures and meadows. The field crickets are, at times, very damaging to field crops, especially alfalfa, wheat, oats or rye. In the Gulf states they may damage tomatoes, peas, beans or strawberries. They also consume dead or weakened crickets, grasshoppers, cutworms and other insects. When these crickets invade the home, they may attack textiles of cotton, linen, wool and silk, as well as furs. Clothing, if stained with perspiration, greasy foods, milk or syrup is liable to injury. Life History. Typically there is one generation a year, but in the southern areas there may be three generations per year. Crickets that spend the winter in the egg stage usually hatch in May, though temperature and rainfall affect the time of hatching. They become adults in July and August, mate, and usually die in September, although some may live until the first frost.

    Crickets
The field cricket is one of the most common household accidental invader insect pests. There are several species of field crickets ranging in size from 1/4 to 3/4 inch, but the best known is the black field cricket, a large, shiny black insect. Like other accidental invaders, field crickets spend most of their life outdoors where they feed, grow, develop and reproduce. Only during a limited portion of their life cycle do they wander indoors by mistake and create an annoyance. Field crickets spend the winter as eggs laid in the soil. These eggs hatch in late spring or early summer, and tiny immature crickets called nymphs begin to feed on a variety of succulent grasses and weeds. The nymphs look like the adults except for their smaller size and the absence of wings. Nymphs develop into adults within approximately 90 days. The adults mate and lay eggs in late summer before succumbing to old age or freezing temperatures in the fall. Chirping, one of the hallmarks of crickets, is done only by the males as a way to attract the females of their own species. Chirping is produced by rubbing the wings together.

O ne cannot fully grasp the culture of Antigua without considering the island's fierce devotion to cricket. The sport is played everywhere and at any time, though official matches tend to be held on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The cricket season lasts from January to July and is interspersed during most seasons with regional and international matches. The Antigua Recreation Ground, which became in 1980-81 the 52nd international test venue, is one of the most exciting places in the world to observe a match. The local crowd is extremely devoted to the game, and the facilities themselves are outstanding. Although Antigua's pool of players is small it has proven to be among the world's richest in talent, having produced four of the West Indies' best players. The first was

What's that sound? It's a cricket! Are you aware of how a cricket makes music? Have you ever wondered why they were popular pets in China and Japan? Do you know how far a cricket can jump?
CRICKET CHOIR
Adult crickets spend their days in shallow burrows beneath a stone, clod of dirt or a tuft of plant. They are most active during the night, and that is when males begin their nightly serenading to attract female mates. Females don't stridulate, or rub special body structures together. A male cricket has a heavy vein with a row of teeth on the underside at the front of each wing. The top of one wing was used as a scraper against the underside of the other wing, like a fingernail drawn along the teeth of a comb. This performance occurs with both wings elevated so that the wing membranes can act as sounding boards. The pitch of the chirps is slightly higher than the highest octave on a piano. Air temperature influences chirping rates; the warmer the night, the faster they chirp. There are special songs for courtship, fighting, and sounding an alarm.
