  • That he that is chosen Fewterer, or that lets loose the Greyhounds, shall receive the Greyhounds matched to run together, into his Leash as soon as he comes into the field, and follow next to the hare-finder, or he who is to start the hare until he come under form; and no horseman of footman is to go before, or on any side, but directly behind, for the space of about forty yards. You ought not to course a hare with more than a brace of Greyhounds. The hare-finder ought to give the hare three so-ho's before he puts her from her form or seat, that the dogs may gaze about and attend her starting. Twelve score yards law ought to be given before the dogs are loosed, unless there be danger of losing her. The dog that gives the first turn, if after that there be neither cote, slip, nor wrench, wins the wager. If the dog gives the first turn and the other bears the hare, he that bears the hare shall win. A go-by, or bearing the hare, is equivalent to two turns. If neither dog turns the hare, he that leads last to the covert wins.

This sport uses an artificial lure, often strips of a white plastic garbage bag, pulled around a field by a motor in a 500 - 1000 yard course with straightaways and turns, to evaluate the coursing ability of sighthounds. The hounds are scored by judges on multiple criteria, including speed, agility, endurance, and follow. Lure coursing field trials have been offered by the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) since the 1970s, and more recently by the AKC as well. Sighthounds can earn the ASFA titles FCh (Field Champion) and LCM (Lure Courser of Merit), and the AKC titles JC (Junior Courser), SC (Senior Courser), MC (Master Courser), FC or DC (Field Champion or Dual Champion), and LCX (Lure Courser Excellent). Lure Coursing with Jack Russell Terriers
    What is "Lure Coursing"?
Lure Coursing is an event that was created for sight hounds to closely simulate the work that they are required to do in the hunt.
It has a lure that runs around a course with many turns and attempts to simulate how a rabbit would run while it is pursued by dogs.
    Can Jack Russells do it?
Yes, most of them love to do Lure Coursing. Most JRT's love to chase rabbits and this is close to the same thing.
Should I let my Jack Russell Lure Course?
There is some historical evidence that Jack Russells were allowed to run with the hounds after fox. This would require quite a bit of endurance for a smaller dog to keep up with the hounds with much longer legs. In my opinion, of all the events that are held at JRTCA trials, the racing (while fun) is the least like anything that the Jack Russell would ever encounter in the real world of the hunt. Lure Coursing is more like something that a Jack Russell would encounter in a hunt than racing is.
Will all Jack Russells do Lure Coursing?

END OF THE ROAD FOR HARE COURSING
Poachers and legal coursers join forces to oppose the ban Illegal poachers and legal hare coursers have rarely seen eye to eye, but the Hunting Bill which takes effect in February 2005, has united these two sides in one plight - the plight to challenge the ban on hare coursing. Legal and illegal hare coursers have their fair share of differences. Whilst poachers hunt hares for food, the coursers use hounds to chase the hare for sport - the aim being to score points and prize money, rather than to kill. But with poachers and coursers soon to find themselves on the same side of the fence, Inside Out takes Harry Harbour, who admits to poaching hares in the past, to a legal course to discover what else the two sides have in common.
The right side of the law
The National Hare Coursing Club was founded in 1858 and holds legal coursing events all over the country.

Our Rocky is now Dual Champion Dragonwing Sirocco!!! On October 20th and 21st the ALBUQUERQUE WHIPPET FANCIERS ASSOCIATION had a great lure coursing event. We happened to be in the neighborhood (okay if you call Utah, the neighborhood) and drove over, what a gorgeous drive! The event is held in a beautiful open, natural grassland (with a few cactus, carefully removed from the field by diligent club members). On Saturday, the weather was gorgeous and the perfect temperature for running. Rocky won BOB to finish his AKC Lure Coursing Championship. All of the breeds agreed to forfeit BIF as it had been a very long day of running and equipment challenges. On Sunday, the weather turned quite challenging, with 30mph+ winds and wind chill temps near freezing. The ABQ club still managed to smile and kept everything running smoothly despite the weather challenges.
Rocky shone again taking BIF from the specials and his 18 month old pup "Sunny" took BOB. Thanks again to the ABQ club and judges. What a great group of welcoming folks!

    Greyhound Racing 1:
    Origins in Coursing
Greyhound racing originated in an ancient sport called coursing, in which a dog chases a game animal. Scenes of what appear to be coursing have been found on Egyptian tombs dating back to before 2500 BC and the dogs depicted look very much like modern greyhounds. The greyhound is an exceptional hunting dog because of its speed and vision. Unlike most hunting dogs, the greyhound doesn't have an acute sense of smell. Instead of scenting quarry, it tends to chase moving objects, which it can spot at long distances, and it can run up to 45 miles an hour in its pursuit. In Medieval England, commoners were forbidden to own greyhounds, so the dog became a symbol of high status. The dogs roamed freely through the grounds and palaces of nobility, catching and killing rodents. Originally, coursing was a sport that exhibited a single dog's skill in sighting and catching a game animal. During the 16th century, though, it became a competitive sport, with two dogs matched against one another in a race for the game. The owners of the dogs usually had a sizeable bet on the result and, at some coursing races, spectators also gathered and placed side bets on one dog or the other. The first official coursing meet was held in 1776 at Swaffham, Norfolk, England. The rules of the Swaffham Coursing Society specified that only two greyhounds were to course a single hare and that the hare was to be given a head start of 240 yards.

    LURE COURSING
    • AWC Home Page About the AWC Lure Coursing Lure coursing is a fun sport for all the sighthound breeds, including Whippets. It is designed to simulate a rabbit or hare hunt in an open field without the actual killing of live game. An artificial lure (actually white plastic trash bags!) on a strong line is pulled through a series of pulleys by a lure machine. The lure operator is able to control the speed of the lure so that it is always kept in front of the coursing hounds. Hounds run in groups of two or three and are distinguished from each other by the brightly colored blankets they wear. Most course plans call for hounds to run distances of 600 to 1000 yards, including several tight turns and long straightaways. Judges watch the course and score the hounds for their overall ability, speed, agility, endurance, enthusiasm, and willingness to closely follow the path of the lure throughout the course. Whippets on the Coursing Field
photo by Steve Surfman Any hound who shows aggression to his running mates, or who physically interferes with them during the course, is disqualified from further running. All hounds run at least twice, and their cumulative scores determine where they place relative to each other. At the end of the trial, ribbons and prizes are awarded. Some placements result in points toward field championships.

    Hare Coursing
Posted by Simon at 9/05/2007 04:32:00 PM Trapping the hares helps to control high densities of the animal which many landowners consider agricultural pests. Now obviously coursing has got sweet feck all to do with pest control. For 1 now that dogs or muzzled most hares do not die. If pest control was really the aim of the project then giving a park ranger a shot gun would be far more effective. So lets have less of the bullshit it is a sport nothing more nothing less. So the question is should it be banned? John Cregan says Hare coursing, which is thoroughly humane, is particularly popular in West Limerick and hares are very numerous around the countryside. after they have been raced and are to old to race anymore are put down and their meat shipped to France. Hares if they survive the ordeal are released back in the wild at the point where they were captured and are rarely coursed more then once a year. Horses on the other hand get a small man sitting on them for half a year beating the shite out of them with a whip for a mile or 2. So is it really much more cruel then horse racing? The reason that John Gormley is having pressure applied to him on this issue is that coursing means votes. Even though
