  • Introduction One of the most enjoyable past times that a Deerhound owner can share with her hound is the sport of lure coursing. Lure coursing was developed in California in the early 1970s as a way to allow sighthounds to use their hunting skills without chasing live game. The dogs, in pairs or trios, chase an artificial lure (usually a white plastic bag) over a set course plan and are judged in the following categories: enthusiasm, follow, speed, agility and endurance. The title "Field Champion" can be earned when your dog has obtained a certain combination of placements and points competing against others of her breed. This article is not intended to go into a detailed description of lure coursing, rather it is meant to give the reader advice on selecting, raising and training a Scottish Deerhound for lure coursing. There is an excellent lure coursing FAQ written by Bonnie Dalzell that should answer any questions about the sport in general.

Open Field Coursing with Borzoi [ Prepared and Distributed As A Public Service by The Borzoi Club of America, Inc. May 1998 ]
This pamphlet is intended to provide answers to some of the questions you may have about open field coursing with your Borzoi, and provide an overview of the sport.
    WHAT IS OPEN FIELD COURSING?
Open field coursing in the United States is the formal, organized, coursing of live game. The game consists of wild jackrabbits native to the areas being hunted. This is the only form of organized live coursing available to the American Borzoi owner. Open field coursing is held only in the Western states where live game coursing with dogs is legal.
WHEN DID OPEN FIELD COURSING START?
In the early part of the twentieth century ranchers in the western plains found coursing necessary to keep the number of predators, i.e. coyotes and wolves under control. Rabbits were also hunted as the large numbers were destroying crops. The first organized open field coursing in the United States was in California in 1959. This was the Pacheco Hunt and was sponsored by the Borzoi Club of California.

Since it's formation FAACE has taken part and been involved in the organisation of the yearly demonstration against the Waterloo Cup. The Waterloo Cup is the so-called blue riband event of the coursing calendar. FAACE has organised Press conferences and anti-hare coursing forums involving MPs, MEPs and prominent people from the area such as the actor Ricky Tomlinson. In 1999 FAACE arranged for the first aerial demonstration against the Waterloo Cup. This was a great moral booster for the antis and a source of much annoyance to the coursers. In very simple terms hare coursing is the setting of greyhounds onto a hare. This event takes place at Altcar, near Formby and about seven miles from

Lure coursing is a modern day copy of the original practice of "coursing" sighthounds. A course is set up in a large field, using corner pulleys, string and a machine which pulls the string through all the pulleys in a set pattern so as to mimic game running away from a predator.
At the end of the course, a Borzoi finally catches her 'bunny'. To preserve the natural attributes of beauty, grace, and speed of the Sighthounds, Lure Coursing was designed for these breeds. For field trial purposes, only Sighthounds can participate. The Canadian Kennel Club rules allow the following breeds to compete: The Afghan Hound Basenji Borzoi Greyhound ... Scottish Deerhound , and the Whippet In addition to the CKC accepted breeds, the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) also recognizes the following breeds: The Italian Greyhound Azawakh , Chart Polski, Rhodesian Ridgeback , Magyar Agar, Sloughi Portuguese Podengo Non-Sighthounds, such as Jack Russell Terriers are also seen participating in this exciting sport but only in practices and fun matches. Amateur oval-track racing for Sighthounds is sponsored by the National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA) . Most breeds (except for the Irish Wolfhound, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Scottish Deerhound, which are too large) are started from a mechanical starting box. The dogs wear numbered, coloured blankets, and leap from the box to chase an artificial lure around an oval or u-shaped course. Each dog runs 3-4 times in a meet, depending on the length of the course. After each go-round, the results are analysed and the races are re-drawn so that dogs that have won their races are matched with other dogs that have also won, and so on. After the final race of the day, the points are added up and the meet winners are decided. Dogs that do well will accumulate points towards an Oval Race Champion (ORC) title.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Coursing
What is open field coursing? Open field coursing is a form of hunting with hounds, and, as with all forms of hunting in California, it is well-regulated by the Department of Fish and Game. For centuries, man has bred sighthounds to hunt fur-bearing game using their keen eyesight and streamlined bodies to locate, follow and capture the prey. Is coursing legal in states other than California? To our knowledge (and we have done a lot of checking), there are no states in the U.S. that specifically ban the use of dogs to take hares. In some regions, the hare population is too low to permit any hunting of hares. Hunters, including sighthound owners, back conservation efforts and support each state's wildlife management agency in the preservation of the health and diversity of wildlife. We welcome anyone who knows of a state in which it is a crime to take hares using hounds to let us know What is a sighthound?

We've updated the Calendar Page with 2008 information and it includes a Special Event!! Cascade Coursing Club was founded in 1998 with the purpose of providing American Kennel Club Lure Coursing events in the greater Seattle, Washington area. We are strongly dedicated to training all Sighthounds and their owners for safe and successful participation in the sport. We hold regular training sessions, called workouts, in the Snoqualmie Valley east of Seattle, and our lure coursing trials have also been held in this area, not far from highway I-90. Lure Coursing as a competitive dog sport is over 30 years old in the USA, and 12 Sighthound breeds are eligible to compete and earn the AKC recognized titles of Junior Courser, Senior Courser, Field Champion and Lure Courser Excellent. These titles in their abbreviated form of JC, SC, FC ,MX, and LCX become part of the hound's name, are entered in the American Kennel Club stud book as part of the hound's permanent record and become part of the hound's official pedigree. Lure Coursing is wonderful fun for both owner and hound and gives the hound an opportunity to satisfy the basic urge to hunt with no live "prey" involved. We invite you and your hounds to join us in training and in trials.

Training Your Irish Wolfhound Puppy For Lure Coursing The intent of this article is to help Irish Wolfhound owners train their puppies to compete in the sport of lure coursing. Certainly some of the ideas discussed here can apply to all of the sighthounds, but the topics will mainly be focused toward the Irish Wolfhound and will be based on methods that I have used or seen used. As puppies, both Finn and Clare were socialized extensively. This is one of the easiest things for an owner to do, yet it is often neglected. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a socialization as this will give the hound confidence to leave its owner’s side and will teach it to interact with other hounds. Too many times I’ve seen yearling (or older) Irish Wolfhounds attempt lure coursing that either won’t leave their owner or will return to them after only running a short distance. Sometimes the desire to run simply isn’t enough if the hound has to overcome a confidence deficiency. Socialization can be as easy as attending a puppy class, letting the puppy have playtime with other puppies, or allowing a friend to walk your puppy. The time between twelve and sixteen weeks is especially critical in developing a hound’s social skills. It is extremely important to know when to begin actually running an Irish Wolfhound puppy and to be aware of the both the physical and mental limitations of the young hound. Due to the rapid growth rate of an Irish Wolfhound, running a puppy too young or too often can cause irreparable damage to its physical structure. Certainly it is permissible as well as advisable to take young puppies out for lure coursing practice if for no other reason that the socialization.

There is little doubt an Afghan Hound was born to run. You see it in your hound every day. A squirrel, a bird, one of their kennel mates - they stalk and SPRING running silently and swiftly toward their "prey." The "ultimate" in exercising your hounds natural prey drive in a controlled arena has to be lure coursing. The lure may be an actual fuzzy tail, more often than not it's a white plastic bag. No matter. Lure coursing mimics the zig and zag of a real animal that is what excites your dog. Afghans run in packs of three. Though these hounds may have never seen each other before yet each seems to instinctively know their role in the "hunt." Its thrilling to watch your dog do what it was born to do!
