In explaining the sport to Fast Company , Skiles said, "If you take average, experienced divers and put them in an underwater cave environment, you expose them to all sorts of risks that they don't understand and that they're not prepared to deal with. They would certainly die. And it would be a hard, terrifying death." So why do people do it?

Home Introduction Interview with National Geographic Blog ... Contact qm_create(0,false) Locations / Cave Diving in Namibia Namibia is a land of contrasts and surprises. Where the once mighty Fish River carved its magnificent canyon, severe droughts now alter the landscape. Perhaps for this reason nature hides much of its precious water underground, protected from the relentless power of the African sun. Sossusvlei, a lake at the foot of the 350 metre high sand-driven sand dunes of the Namib desert, dry from years of drought and surrounded by the skeletons of gemsbok, Oryx gazella, and other wild game, miraculously sprung to life during the good rains of 1996. The Tsauchab River runs underground during periods of drought. The San hunter-gatherers (Bushmen) have always known where to dig for water in the dry river beds. They named this land " The land God made in anger". In the north of the country is a vast dolomite deposit, laid down over millions of years by the skeletons of the animals of an ancient sea. Here the water does not soak into the desert sand but slowly dissolves the dolomite to form huge underground lakes. Sometimes the process leaves the roof so thin that it collapses, forming crater lakes, sometimes underground lakes such as Dragon's Breath, the largest underground lake in the world, lie undisturbed in total darkness. Here you can retrace these ancient water courses in search of rare fish, aquatic amphipods, German field guns from the First World War and spectacular backdrops of sheer rock walls, huge calcite formations and cobalt-blue water of unsurpassed clarity. The visibility in Dragon's Breath and Harasib has been estimated to be in excess of 150 metres. For the more adventurous divers water depths of well over 100 metres can be found. A knowledge of advanced rope climbing techniques is required for some caves.

Cave Diving: A dangerous hobby if untrained
Cave diving is dangerous! In Suwannee County, according to Chief Suwannee County Deputy Ron Colvin, there have been five cave-diving related deaths in the past five years.
John Orlowsky is the Sheriff’s Office go-to guy for recoveries. Colvin said often they don’t have to call someone to recover a dead diver because their buddies go in, find them and bring them out. For river rescues and recoveries, the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office uses the Taylor County dive team.
Orlowsky has been on many recoveries. He pulled two out of Convict Springs in Lafayette County in the early 90s. In May of 2003 Orlowsky pulled a diver out of Cow Springs. According to Orlowsky, the diver was found in the upstream section of the spring with gas in the tanks and a full buddy bottle.
Right after New Year’s Eve in 2005, Orlowsky pulled a diver out of Peacock 3. This diver was cavern-certified only and Orlowsky found him 1300 feet into the system. From the diver’s wrist-mounted computer, Orlowsky determined the diver had descended as far as 180 feet. He was found at 55-60 feet. His death was ultimately attributed to a heart attack, according to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office.

this is a shallow site. Especially sites 1,2,4 where the sailboards hang out at times other than that the shore diving is GREAT! Just be careful at the cave. I do not suggest you dive there. If you do go to the cave you should have cave experiance and training and remeber Dive safe.

Exploring the unknown depths of the remote and spectacular Turkish cave system of Altinbesik was the aim of the Dragon Cave Diving Expedition, although nothing ever turns out quite as planned.
Martyn Farr describes the adventure

The mules lurch from side to side, slipping and stumbling on the cobbled street. Strapped to their backs are 18 cylinders and a vast array of other technical hardware. It has taken us more than two years to prepare for this "high-tech" expedition and here we are employing one of the oldest forms of transport in the world - a muletrain - as the only way to get our kit to the site of our intended exploration.
In a team of six, we have come to the Taurus Mountains of south central Turkey to tackle some of the most challenging cave sites on the planet. Our quest is original exploration at the bottom of the 1000m-deep Manavgat Gorge. Set beneath deep-blue, cloudless skies, the river Manavgat has carved its way through incredibly tortured geology to form one of the most rugged, remote and inaccessible limestone valleys in the world.
At the foot of the gorge lies the renowned and perhaps most beautiful cave system in the country, Altin- besik Cave. This is a huge cave by any standard.
