Carriage Driving
Carriage driving is another Equine Assisted Activity that involves riding in or actually driving a cart or carriage pulled by a horse. People with disabilities that restrict their movements, such as those who cannot easily transfer from a wheelchair, can participate with the security of an adapted cart. Benefits include improvements in balance, posture, coordination and emotional well-being. Carriage driving has many additional benefits:
  • Driving provides a recreational and sporting experience with a horse. It provides a mental challenge similar to that of riding, the challenge of working in harmony with a horse and learning an equine skill step by step. Carriage driving encourages the development of self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment as various maneuvers are learned. It can improve the cognitive skills of sequencing, following directions and differentiating between left and right, etc. Driving is another venue for socializing with other participants, the volunteers and instructors, and of course, the horse. It offers another opportunity for developing relationships, equine and human, of mutual respect and trust.

44. Carriage Driving Events

http://www.prowsefarm.org/carriage.htm
The sport of pleasure carriage driving involves maneuvering horses and carriages around a set of objects in precision courses. It is ideal for horses trained as harness-racing trotters, as well as former high-stepping show horses. A full carriage combined competition is an elegant event that is timed and requires horses and carriages to negotiate an obstacle course. The "tests" include maneuvering through or around objects likely to have been encountered on a carriage drive from the past. In the marathon pace event, competitors try to complete a 3-kilometer course in an exact time - not faster or slower. Contestants are penalized for every second over or under the time limit. Years past, Prowse Farm has been the location previously chosen by the South Shore Carriage Club which held its first pleasure driving show at the farm in 1998. More recently the members of the Rhode Island Driving Club also hosted their own carriage driving event. Many of whom were former members of the South Shore Carriage Club, which no longer exists. Below are photos from carriage driving events held at Prowse Farm.

Dorset based equine artist Jeff Liles has accompanied and supported his wife Julia for over 20 years at numerous Horse Driving Trials. While Julia drives their team of grey Welsh ponies, Jeff acts as groom, navigator, handyman, engineer, and in any other capacity required to keep the show on the road! Since the early days when Jeff and Julia, training books in hand, began converting their children's outgrown Shetland Ponies into driving ponies, Jeff has penned cartoons of some of his more humorous observations of the art and etiquette of private and competitive carriage driving.
Some of Jeff's pen and ink cartoons are now available to buy as as a series of Greeting Cards. Each card is printed 7" x 5" size, with the inside left blank so that you can add your own personal message. Carriage drivers, supporters and fans alike will find something in this collection to remind them of the quirkier side of carriage driving. As time goes by more cartoons will be added to the gallery of cards. In the meantime please feel free to browse through the gallery and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions whatsoever.

The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving Robyn Cuffey and Jaye-Allison Winkel Seeing the need for a truly practical guide to carriage driving, the authors combined their over thirty years' of driving experience in the writing of The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving . Generously illustrated with over 350 photographs and diagrams and covering topics ranging from the selection and fitting of harness and vehicle to preparing for competition and driving multiples, this book is sure to become an indispensable resource.
Robyn Cuffey is an international clinician specializing in retraining Standardbred horses. She is co-author of Retraining the Harness Racehorse . Cuffey began carriage driving twenty years ago and in this time she has driven for recreation and for competition in combined driving, pleasure showing and competitive driving. She has trained and driven horses and ponies for single driving and pairs. Knowing that too many people are lucky to "survive" their first carriage driving experiences with ill-fitting and marginally safe equipment and inappropriate horses and vehicles, helping others get a safe start in carriage driving is a primary goal for Cuffey. As an instructor and trainer at her Buxton, Maine farm, Cuffey fields questions about carriage driving almost daily. This book was written in response to this interest from students and fellow horse owners.

Daufuskie Island- Carriage Driving
by: Darley Newman It was time for my carriage driving clinic. The equipment was a bit intimidating at first. Once you find out the function for each piece of tack, it makes sense, but I wouldn't want to have to tack up Trotter again on my ownnot just yet at least. I would be taking a carriage driving clinic with Nancy, who trains horses at the equestrian center in carriage driving and used to harness race herself. We would use Trotter, a 12-year-old Standardbred, who was first used on the racetrack and later by the Amish. So if you asked me to tack up Trotter again right now, it would probably be a mess. Like anything, practice makes perfect. Driving, on the other hand, I could do again. It does help to have some riding skills, because getting the right contact with the reins is so important when driving. I kept thinking back to Sally Swift's book Centered Riding and about holding the reins as if I was holding a bird in my hands. That helped. It also helped to relax my arms, like in riding. We started out with me driving Trotter on the ground. Nancy said that I would have to get used to standing directly behind a horse and trust that he'll not kick you. Trotter had been well trained, so I wasn't worried about that.

The Sport of Carriage Driving
In all classes at a pleasure driving show, like the Villa Louis Carriage Classic, the driver must be attired appropriately. This usually means that he should wear a hat, gloves, and apron and carry a whip in hand. Attire should be conservative in design and appropriate to the vehicle driven; i.e., formal attire with formal vehicles, country attire with country vehicles. Horses should also conform to the vehicle type; i.e., it would be expected to see a more flashy horse with a more formal vehicle and a more ground covering horse with a country vehicle. The whip should be carried within the frame of the carriage, near the horse and not stick out to the side where it would be rendered useless. For more information on the sport of pleasure driving contact the American Driving Society or the Carriage Association of America
