We also have a form for reporting any problems you encounter whilst out driving in the Assembly-owned woodlands. Full instructions are on the form.
Find out about obtaining permission for a carriage driving event in the Assembly-owned woodlands.
There are currently two locations where you can turn up and drive without a permit in Wales - designated and waymarked routes in Dyfnant near Welshpool, and the Crychan trails near Llandovery. The Crychan trails are not waymarked with specific carriage driving routes, but there is an open access policy for carriage drivers (restricted to forest roads) at this location - anyone driving in this forest should use the marker numbers purely as a directional indication relating to the map reference.

February 2006 THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ON CARRIAGE DRIVING The Duke of Edinburgh took up carriage driving in 1972 when he gave up playing polo. He became an enthusiast and entered his first competition in 1973. More than 30 years later, he describes his most memorable experiences both on and off the box seat. Like so many things in my life, I came to driving horse-drawn carriages quite by chance. I had started riding quite young - in spite of the warnings of my father, for many years a professional cavalry officer, that all horses were dangerous and to be avoided at all costs. My first recollection of riding was on the endless beaches of the Black Sea while on a visit to my cousin Michael who, owing to the erratic behaviour of his father, King Carol, and the vagaries of Romanian politics of the time, happened to be king of that country. This was in 1928 when we were both seven years old. After that my riding was spasmodic until my Uncle Dickie, at that time Lord Louis Mountbatten, got me onto one of his polo ponies and sent me off to try to hit a ball about with a polo stick. This might have led to my playing the game, but unfortunately the war intervened. The Duke of Edinburgh with an early riding companion, his cousin, King Michael of Romania

A horse's gait, similar to the human walk, helps strengthen spine and pelvic muscles, improves posture and coordination, and increases joint mobility. Whether being ridden or driven, horses allow people living with disabilities to travel with ease to places wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers cannot take them. Beyond the tangible benefits, horseback riding grants a newfound freedom. Riding a horse presents a combination of new sounds and sensations. Whether the disability is physical, cognitive, behavioral, or emotional, the individual's accomplishments of mounting and riding provide a tremendous boost to confidence and self worth.

Carriage Driving is a fast growing sport. NARHA centers can offer students with physical, mental, sensory, or emotional conditions the rewards of interaction and control of a horse or pony while driving from a carriage seat or in their own wheelchair. Using a horse and carriage gives participants an alternative or an addition to riding, opening up the world of horses to those who may be unable to ride due to weight, balance, fatigue, fear of heights, the inability to sit astride, or other issues. Therapeutic Driving is all about imparting knowledge of safety, horses, harnessing, and driving skills to children and adults using teamwork. It takes 3-5 volunteers to make one driving turn out! Disabled drivers who are interested in competing are welcome at mainstream carriage driving competitions, such as pleasure driving and combined driving events, where they compete on an equal footing with the able bodied, and drivers in wheelchairs are seen at these competitions. As with riding, there are
