CANDLEPIN BOWLING
The pins in ten-pin bowling were originally tall and slender, almost cylindrical. It was hard to get high scores with such pins, so bowling alleys in New York City about 1850 began to use the familiar larger, bottle-shaped pins.
After the Civil War, "big pin" bowling became the dominant version of the sport throughout the country. But in 1881, Justin P. White, the owner of a billiard room in Worcester, Massachusetts, and John J. Monsey, an expert billiards player, revivedor perhaps re-inventedthe older form of bowling.
The original candlepins were 11 inches high and tapered to a diameter of 1 inch at each end. Bowlers used a wooden ball, 3 inches in diameter and weighing about 3 pounds, on a regulation-sized tenpin alley.
Because of the size of the ball and spacing of the pins, it was very difficult to get a good score, so White and Monsey hit on the idea of leaving fallen pins, or "deadwood," on the lane to increase scoring. Using deadwood to help knock down the remaining pins is an important tactical feature of candlepin bowling. The pins are now somewhat bigger than in 1881: 15 3/4 inches high and 2 15/16 inches at the middle, tapering to 1 3/4 inch at the ends. The ball is 4 1/2 inches in diameter and weighs from 2 pounds, 5 ounces, to 2 pounds, 7 ounces.

I coulda been a contendah in fact, I was, at one time!
Here's a summary of my tournament accomplishments: 1975 MBA State Championships. Junior Boys' Singles, 5th Place (533 for 5 strings)
1975 WCBC World Championships. Midget Boys' Singles, 5th Place*
1976 MBA State Championships. Junior Boys' Team, 3rd Place
1976 World Invitational Championships. Junior Boys' Singles, 3rd Place (522)
1977 Northeast Candlepin Bowling Classic. Junior Division III Singles, 2nd Place (579)
1978 MBA State Championships. Senior Boys' Doubles, 3rd Place
1979 MBA State Championships. Senior Boys' Singles, 3rd Place (586)
*The '75 Worlds finish is from memory, because trophies were only awarded to the first three finishers in each division. If I recall correctly, so many years after the fact, there were three youth divisions: Midget, Junior, and Senior. I'm not 100% sure about that part of it but I did finish 5th in the world tournament that year, in whichever division 12-year-olds competed in. The "WCBC" referred to here is not the present-day World Candlepin Bowlers Congress, but rather the World Candlepin Bowling Council, which was the predecessor of today's International Candlepin Bowling Association (ICBA), the world sanctioning body for candlepin bowling. Other highlights of my close-but-no-cigar youth career included an appearance, in the fall of 1975, on a program called Candlepin Champs, which was broadcast on Channel 7 in Boston. I bowled a two-string match against one Paul Kobel, who had finished fourth in the state tournament. After a seesaw battle, Paul defeated me by seven pins, making a spare-7 in the final box of the second string. It was a heartbreaking defeat, because in my ninth box, I had dropped five pins with my first ball, then converted the spare, but was called for a lob, nullifying the second ball and giving me a 5 for the box. I knocked down nine pins with my first ball of the tenth box so that lob in the ninth cost me 14 pins and the match.

Hopefully I will get some pictures on here to show you what Candlepin bowling looks like. Same lanes as bowling, but the ball resembles a bocce ball, the pins are skinny. I believe the record score is 243. You get 3 shots. If you get a strike you mark down a '//', and get count on the next two balls, if you get a spare, you mark down a '/' and get count on the next shot, if you get all the pins down in three shots, you get 10 count for that frame and mark down a 'X'. You can chop out the 1, 5 in Candlepin bowling, and my favorite seems to be getting only the 4 pin on spares, unfortunately. I have checked some bowling sites listed on Yahoo, and unfortunately all they do is give listing for duckpin places in Ontario. I heard from a friend in southern Connecticut there are duckpin bowling centers, if you know of one PLEASE MAIL ME. =)

    57. History Of Candlepin Bowling
In 1893, Jack Monsey devised the rules and regulations for candlepin bowling and he standardized the equipment used to play the game.
    http://ledalanes.com/pages/History.htm
History of Candlepin Bowling The game of Candlepins was founded in 1880 by Justin P. White in Worcester Massachusetts as an alternative to Ten Pins, which he felt was too easy of a game. Where scores of 300 (a perfect game) was attainable in Ten Pins, since 1880 no one has rolled a 300 game in Candlepins. The pins were made of wood and varied in size since the pins need constant sanding on their ends to remain upright. These are the 10-inch broomsticks that Justin P. White found when he purchased the alleys at 37 Pearl Street in Worcester Massachusetts in 1879. Together with a 3-inch ball, this must have been quite a challenge. It is little wonder that this experiment in bowling was short-lived. However, this discarded equipment germinated the idea of the candlepin in J. P. White's mind.
In 1894, Justin P. White invented the Candlepin that would be used for the next 100 years. Several different pins were tried after 1894. The "Worcester" pin would generally be used in that region, in the seaboard area, the "Boston" pin would be used. Most houses used whatever pin suited their clients tastes.
The lanes of that period varied in length from 30 to 60 feet as did the balls. In 1893, Jack Monsey devised the rules and regulations for Candlepin bowling and he standardized the equipment used to play the game.
