Barcelona declared its opposition to bullfighting yesterday, the first big Spanish city to take a decision which animal rights campaigners welcomed as a step towards getting it banned in at least part of the country.
City councillors carried the motion in a secret ballot, a spokesman said.
Although the vote has no practical effect, and bullfights will continue at the Monumental bullring, it will put pressure on the Catalan regional government to ban what many people consider an emblematic Spanish tradition.
Leah Garcés of the World Society for the Protection of Animals said: "The vote is a giant step forward for animal welfare and will help lead the way to what could be the beginning of the end of bullfighting in Spain."
Barcelona, the regional capital, has two big bullrings, one of which is being turned by the UK architect Richard Rogers into a leisure and shopping precinct, but it has never been significant in the world bull-fighting circuit.

It's the way that many cities and villages celebrate their main festivals. There is not a good festival in these cities if there is not a bullfight. The place where a bullfight is celebrated is always a round arena. The most important characteristic of the bullfight is that the bullfighter has to fight the bull until he kills it with a sword.

State ignores a ban on 'barbaric' bullfighting
January 13, 2008 06:57am Article from: Agence France-Presse Font size: Send this article: Print Email BULLFIGHTS were staged today in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu despite a Supreme Court ruling that banned the centuries-old sport as "barbaric", the Press Trust of India reported. The news agency said Western tourists joined thousands of fans in the district of Alanganallur for the bullfights. During the fights, staged annually throughout Tamil Nadu in January, bulls are forced to drink liquor and have chili powder thrown into their eyes before revellers chase and stone them to death. The Supreme Court yesterday banned the gory sport, calling it a barbaric act.' "We cannot continue with such events if it is barbaric,'' Supreme Court Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said in the ruling. "We cannot allow any event involving cruelty towards animals,'' he said, dismissing the Tamil Nadu government's appeal to allow the event, which marks the harvest season in the state of 55 million people.

Spain's bullfighting craze resurfaces
by Abha Malpani Oct 19th 2007 @ 4:54PM The first (and last time) I saw a bullfight was early morning in a cafe in Valencia. I felt so sick watching I couldn't even finish my coffee, even though I was watching it on a screen across the room. I sat there perturbed as I saw multiple spears oscillating in the bull's back and a crowd cheering as the animal bleeds profusely whilst running to the swooshes of a red cloth swooned dramatically by some hero torerro
Culture, tradition, art, amusement, call it what you want - how could anyone take pleasure in watching the slow death of an animal?
As I spoke to Spaniards about this ghastly game, whilst many were neutral, the majority strongly opposed it. With the "sport" legally banned in Barcelona and otherwise predominantly showcased only in tourist season, it thankfully seemed to be on the verge of obsolesce.
Until the legendary matador Jose Tomas decided to spring back into action. Local news channels and the general population seem to be rejuvenated with his comeback. Perhaps the pure 'hero' value he left lingering when he abruptly retired in 2002 has overwhelmed people and made them forget that the brutal killing of innocent animals is also at stake with this revival.
This mix-up and mess-up of tradition, art, bravery, and fame, with hypocrisy and human morality leaves me disappointed and confused; and I don't like it.

Message Board Links ABOUT BULLFIGHTING Although bullfighting is arguably one of the cruelest blood sports currently in existence, it is enjoying continual popularity worldwide, especially in Portugal, Spain, and France. Even as the worldwide standard for the treatment of animals continues to rise, bullfighting remains fiercely guarded as a culturally rich art. But at what cost? THE BULLFIGHT A bullfight officially begins with the entrance of the toro, but many preparations prior to the fight itself ensure that the bull's basic ability for self-defense is virtually removed. Proponents of bullfighting frequently cite the bull's fair opportunity to fight for his life. However, subtle but disabling methods are used to impair the bull's senses and create the image that the public seeks. His eyes may be smeared with petroleum jelly, his horns dulled and his ears and nose stuffed with cotton. He is almost always presented to the matador in a heavily drugged state. The purpose of the sedation is to remove the bull's initial flight defense and leave him with only the option of aggression. The bull's entrance is almost immediately followed by the use of the picas, sharpened metal rods decorated colorfully. Picas are meant to severely damage the shoulder muscles of the bull and cause intense pain without much blood. The bull's immediate fearful reaction is meant to be misinterpreted as aggression. Generally this job is fulfilled by a picador, a bullfighter on horseback.

    Bullfighting
Bullfighting or tauromachy (Spanish toreo, corrida de toros or tauromaquia; Portuguese tourada, corrida de touros or tauromaquia) is a sport that involves, most of the time, professional performers (generally called in Spanish toreros or matadores and in Portuguese toureiros) who execute various formal moves with the goal of appearing graceful and confident, while masterful over the bull itself; these maneuvers are performed at close range, concluding (in Spanish-style bullfighting) with the death of the bull by a well-placed sword thrust as the finale. It is a ritual spectacle that is usually designated in Spain as an art, for others as a sport, as tallies are kept for the purpose of ranking the bullfighters. The art of bullfighting requires a significant degree of skill and athleticism, resulting in the widely held view of matadors as national celebrities. The practice generates heated controversy in many areas of the world, including Spain where the "classic" bullfighting was born.
