Bull Fighting Bullfighting is a traditional Latin American spectacle in which bulls bred to fight are tortured by armed men on horseback, then killed by a matador. Starved, beaten, isolated, and drugged before the “fight,” the bull is so debilitated that he cannot defend himself. After being stabbed, speared, and harpooned, the suffering animal is killed.
Bulls are generally calm, peaceful animals who behave violently only when defending themselves or their territory. For this reason, bulls must be expressly bred for bullfighting. More specifically, they are bred to be slow, simple, and predictable, in other words, easy to slaughter. Some bulls are even bred to return to the bullfighter and the torture he inflicts, therein giving the mistaken impression that the animal is fighting a fair fight. Before the “Fight” Heavy weights are tied to the bull’s neck for weeks before the fight to weaken him. Workers rub petroleum into his eyes to obscure his vision and beat the bull’s kidneys repeatedly. They give him tranquilizers, laxatives, and drugs that induce paralysis or a hypnotized state. They feed the bull a great deal of salt so that he will drink excessive amounts of water, become bloated and, consequently, slow. The vast majority of bulls are forced to undergo afeitado, the cutting down or filing of the horns. Part of the bull’s horns are sawed off so that he cannot thrust at his opponent properly. All the while, the bullfighter is practicing his techniques on underweight heifers.

Save EMail Write to Editor CHENNAI: A team from Tamil Nadu is rushing to New Delhi to file a review petition in Supreme Court, requesting it to vacate the stay on the ban on Jallikattu, the traditional bullfighting festival organised during Pongal.
Chief minister M Karun-anidhi has decided to file a review petition following reports of general displeasure among people over the stay order. A high-level team is leaving for Delhi on Sunday. According to sources, state's attorney general, the DGP and Madurai collector S S Jawahar would be finalizing the review petition in Delhi.
The apex court had declined to lift the ban on the "valorous" sport that has been an ancient tradition. This led to shock and anger among villages, especially of Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniapuram in Madurai district.
Reports of village heads protesting against the court order and refusing to heed officials' appeal not to defy the court poured in from Madurai. The district collector is said to have held many rounds of discussions with organizers of Jallikattu on Saturday.

There are some animal welfare laws in Spain, but these are seldom enforced, and bullfighting is specifically excluded from such legislation. Even the European Union has declared bullfighting a protected activity under the heading of National Culture. A law dating from 1929 stated that children under the age of 14 should not attend bullfights. However, some time ago, Minister of the Interior Jose Luis Corcuera presented a new law repealing this prohibition. Therefore, children are legally desensitised to animal suffering from an early age.
Some progress has been made at the local level on the legal front: in the State of Catalonia, there are seven fixed bullrings, and no new rings are allowed to be built, unlike in other regions of Spain. A popular local festival in Catalonia, "corre bou," bull running, is also tightly regulated and the bull must not be killed. Bullfighting has been forbidden by local authorities at the village of Tossa de Mar (Costa Brava) and in the Canary Islands.

Lifelong Aficionado
When Hemingway saw his first bullfight in Pamplona in 1923, he brought his wife Hadley along because he hoped the event would have a positive influence on the unborn son she then carried. The sport certainly affected the budding writer. It became one of the reigning passions of his life.
In 1932, he journeyed to Spain to research "Death in the Afternoon," a manifesto on bullfighting that was published in Esquire and became the Bible of the sport.
In 1937, Hemingway returned to cover the Spanish Civil War, translating his experiences into newspaper articles, a flurry of short stories, the 1938 play "The Fifth Column," and the 1940 novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Fiercely supporting the Loyalist cause, he overcame his fear of public speaking to deliver an anti-Franco speech at the Second American Writers' Congress. He also helped produce the propaganda film "Spanish Earth."
Hemingway last visited Spain in 1959 to cover a series of one-on-one contests between two leading matadors. Life magazine had commissioned a 10,000-word piece. Hemingway turned in 10,000 words, later published as the 1985 epic "The Dangerous Summer."

Repost: Why Bullfights and the Running with the Bulls sucks
Posted on Thursday, July 8th, 2004 12:51 PM
From July 7, 2002 . Since I have exponentially more readers now, I figured I'd reprint one of my first long blog posts San Fermin (the festival of Pamplona) is here and thus bullfighting is back on television. Just to remind myself what a gory show it is, I just sat through another one of the slayings on TV and am still amazed by it. It's so frustrating, that I'd thought I'd share... When I first came to Spain I had this idea that bull fighting was this sort of "traditional" sport where once a year or so they would kill a bull or two and that it was okay. But it's not like that at all. It's a sport, televised just like baseball is in the U.S... Thousands of bulls are killed each year in the most amazingly cruel manner possible. During festivals like San Fermin, they'll torture a dozen or so bulls a day. See all those bulls on TV? They're all dead by the end of the day. Let me walk you through a typical bullfight... I've seen several of them all the way through on television. First the bull comes out of the pen and it's raring to go. It looks around the arena and sees 4 or 5 (not sure) matador-like guys with pink capes. So the bull starts charging them (of course) and really gets worked up. He's got spit flying out of his mouth, he's running around like and idiot and really defending his turf. But the pink-cape guys are just there to tire him out, so they work as a team running the bull around the arena until he starts to wear down.

Squashing an earlier verdict to continue the game, the Supreme Court said the practice should not continue, citing animal abuse Known as "taming the bull", the tradition normally takes place during the Pongal harvest festival - and rights groups have long argued it amounts to animal cruelty. However, the ban has not gone down well with the bullfighters, who have decided to challenge the ruling. P. Rajasekharan, President of the Bull Fight Association, said: "We will not be deterred by this judgement, we will go for further appeal against the judgement and try to win this case." The object of Jallikattu is to control the animal long enough to take the prize - a small cloth bag tied between the sharp horns. The bulls are drugged with steroids and are sometimes made to drink alcohol in order to enrage them preparing for the event. Post to Fark Post to del.icio.us

Spanish TV tiptoes out of bullring
By Daniel Woolls The Associated Press Published: August 23, 2007 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size MADRID: State-run Spanish television has quietly dropped live coverage of bullfighting, ending a decades-old tradition of showcasing the national pastime on the ground that the deadly duel between matador and beast is too violent for young viewers. In practical terms, the decision by the Socialist government is largely symbolic. Of the hundreds of bullfights that fill the March-to-October calendar each season, state-run television tended to broadcast only about a dozen anyway. Pay television channels and stations owned by regional governments are full of bullfights. Still, many in the bullfighting world are livid, as is the conservative opposition, over a move they see as slighting a cherished piece of Spanish culture.

    Hemingway in Pamplona
Bullfight in Pamplona I've fashioned a makeshift costume out of light khakis, a white t-shirt, and a wild west red bandanna. With me in the line at the bus station are young Spaniards, their uniforms exact: white trousers, white tunics, and the official San Fermin scarf, neatly tied in front and draped across the back. Inexplicably, I'm at the front of the line, a solitary American in questionable attire, and as such am duly ignored. They play at bull fighting, their index fingers as horns, and I can't help but think of Hemingway's short story, "The Capital of the World," in which two young cafe waiters tie knives to a chair to simulate a bull, until one of them is fatally gored. The bus leaves at eight in the evening. The trip from Barcelona to Pamplona takes seven hours or so, and no one, including myself, gets any sleep. Commandeered by these San Fermin pilgrims, it's a party bus, and rules about smoking, drinking, drug use, eating, and disturbing fellow passengers are happily disregarded. We arrive in the early morning to find no battery of waiting loved ones, no old women hawking accommodations. I follow the throng into the midnight streets. Fireworks burst overhead, their exploding colors raining down and painting the ubiquitous suits of white in dazzling, dancing rainbows. I head for the bright lights and carnival sounds.

The weekend's chores are done and Monday morning is still hours away. You settle into the sofa, click the remote, and sit back to enjoy an NFL match on one of the major networks. But instead of three hours of gridiron bliss, you get a second-rate 1950s musical. While for American football fans this scenario is, these days, just a Heidi Bowl nightmare, for bullfighting aficionados across Spain it's suddenly a bad dream coming true. This summer, for the first time in its 51-year history, the state-run Spanish Television Corporation (TVE) has not broadcast a single corrida.

AP Photo/Cesar Rangel By Neil Trent In April, the city council in Barcelona voted to condemn bullfighting, making it the fifth city in Spain to come out on the side of civilization. As the capital of Catalonia and one of the world's cultural centers, Barcelona's progressive, if mostly symbolic, stand bodes well for everyone who wishes to see this blood sport end. However, what makes Barcelona's stance so encouraging is that it expresses the people's will. A recent poll showed that 63% of residents want to see bullfighting end in their city, giving officials the green light (and backbone) to buck traditions even if they don't have the legal authority to actually impose a ban. (That must come from the provincial Catalonian government.) The same poll yielded another important finding: Fully 96% of respondents indicated that any entertainment involving the suffering of animals should be banned. In a world of war and violence and perpetual terrorist threats, the people in Barcelona clearly recognize that they do not have to accept brutality in their faces for entertainment purposes. So their government has decided to call Barcelona "a pioneer in the abolition of bullfighting."
