Schedule BROOMBALL, BROOMBALL, BROOMBALL!!! We no longer offer Broomball at Cool Sports! What is Broomball?
Broomball "Equimpment" The equipment used by the players is very similar to that of ice hockey; and in most cases, it is hockey equipment that is used. However, in broomball, a player can play the game with the only three items of equipment: tennis shoes (aka, broomball shoes), the broom, and a protective helmet. The broom and helmet are provided, so just bring your shoes. Broomball History There have been different accounts of when and where the first broomball games occurred in the World. Saskatchewan and Montreal argue they were the host to the first game with dates on the first game estimated to be in the early 1900s. An unconfirmed story from a Swedish historian has the game dating back to 1000 years ago when Vikings played a brutal form of broomball that was called knattleikr . A stick and ball was used and shoes with tar and sand were used for traction on the ice. The Great Equalizer The ice surface could be called the great equalizer in Broomball as it allows men, women and children to play on a more equal basis, especially at the recreational level. Recreational Broomball teams are easily formed since the skill of skating is not a prerequisite and the initial equipment costs are low.

1995 Canadian National Broomball Championship
The 1995 Women's Broomball Championship was held in Barrie, Ontario during the week of April 5 - 9. Despite the weather conditions (much snow), teams from every province and territory were represented with the exception of PEI and the Yukon. Provinces were placed into two divisions, according to last year's standings, for Round robin play. There were six teams in each division, and after the round robin, the Top two teams in the two divisions moved on to the "A" Pool for Playoffs, and the next two (3rd and 4th), in the two divisions entered the "B" Pool Playoffs. The remaining teams were eliminated from the competition (Edmonton Angels, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and NWT). I'll add here that the goalie from NWT, was named top goalie of the National Championship! Here are the results of the 1995 Women's Broomball Championships: A Pool: 1. Québec (Entremi) (Gold Medal, A Pool) 2. Ontario Champ (Barrie Satellites) (Silver Medal, A Pool) 3. Manitoba (The Storm) (Bronze Medal, A Pool) 4. Ontario Host (Parr Line) (4th, A Pool) B Pool: 5. Saskatchewan (Gold, B Pool) 6. Alberta (Last year Host) (Silver, B Pool) 7. Newfoundland (Bronze, B Pool) 8. British Columbia (4th, B Pool) Not making the playoffs: Alberta (Last year's champs!) Broomball.....Another Great Winter Sport!
Message from the President Thanks for stopping by our new website, please have a look around and enjoy some of the moments captured over the years. There’s a fair amount of contact information, in addition to events that are up and coming. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all members of the NWT Broomball executive for their hard work and commitment to broomball over the past few years.  We have a dynamic group of individuals working to make this incredible sport fun, competitive and basically there for all to enjoy.  Most of us truly feel this is “The Greatest   Canadian Winter Sport” . NWT Broomball has been around “officially” since the mid 1980’s.  Some of the same faces still sit on the executive today, which is a testament to the love of this sport by many.   The Yellowknife kids between the ages of 11-18 an opportunity to play our sport for free!!   Yep, they even provide the equipment for the kids.  If you want your child to participate in a fun sport that offers great cardiovascular workouts for one hour each week, this may be just the sport for your family!!  Contact info is on the homepage! There are a lot of travel opportunities for those individuals who wish to pursue a competitive level of broomball.  Men’s, women’s and junior level players travel to National and Western Canadian Championships each year.  These are fast paced tournaments that provide our athletes an opportunity to play at a higher level of competition.
