Three of the top four mens and womens two man bobsleigh teams in the UK, along with officials from the British Army bobsleigh team, will be in the island for the Bobsleigh Push Start Competition. A 125m long bobsleigh push start track, will be set up for the first time in Jersey, at this summer’s Sure Great Outdoors event, which takes place at Manor Farm on 23rd and 24th June. Three, two man bobsleighs will be brought to the island for the two-day event - On the Saturday, the professionals will give demonstrations and provide training for islanders - then Sunday sees the 'bobsleigh push start competition' open to all islanders - providing they are deemed fit enough to cope with the challenge. Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway will present the trophies on Sunday afternoon. John Hamilton, one of the organisers involved in bringing the bobsleigh teams over said: "The bobsleigh push start competition is an event which simulates the start of a bobsleigh run and is used as a method of selecting teams and as part of their training regime in the summer months. It’s a real chance to experience that unique feeling of taking part in the extreme sport of bobsleigh and we are keen to get people in Jersey involved."

It's been 18 years since the Jamaican bobsled team made its debut at the Olympics. Immortalized in the Disney movie Cool Runnings , the team has finished 29th, 34th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. An offspring of tobogganing, the modern-day sport of bobsledding was conceived in Switzerland late in the 1800s. Each nation may enter a maximum of two sleds in each event. The sleds are made of fiberglass and must adhere to strict size and weight restrictions. A driver steers the sled by pulling one rope with his right hand to go right or a separate rope with his left hand to go left. The second member of the two-person team is the brakeman. Always the last person in the sled, he or she pulls up on the brake, lowering a piece of metal into the ice to stop the sled after the run. To round out a four-man team a pair of pushers are added. They are responsible for helping to get the sled started.
