( Audio help More spoken articles Bobsleigh bobsled United States and Canada ) or bobsledge (Brazil) is a winter sport invented by Englishmen in the late 1860s in which teams make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sled . The various types of sleds came several years before the first tracks was built in St Moritz , where the original bobsleds were adapted upsized Luge Skeleton sleds designed by the adventurously wealthy to carry passengers. All three types were adapted from boys delivery sleds and toboggans . Competition naturally followed, and to protect the working class and rich visitors in the streets and byways of St Moritz, hotel owner Caspar Badrutt , owner of the historic Krup Hotel and the later Palace Hotel built the first familiarly configured 'half-pipe' track circa 1870. It has hosted the sports during two Olympics and is still in use today.

Buy our Jamaicans.com Bobsled T-shirt Now!!! Fourteen years ago the first Jamaican Bobsleigh team made history in the Calgary Olympics Winter Games. They warmed the hearts of many worldwide in their first attempt at Olympic glory and was even immortalized in the popular Walt Disney movie "Cool Runnings". Since then the team has been a mainstay in the Winter Olympics and now have their eyes focused on bringing back a medal to Jamaica. In the first games (1988) the team was seen as a novelty as they had many technically difficulties, injuries and crashes. In the second games (1992) the team had drastically improved. They had practiced hard for 4 years and were confident and focused. The 4-man team came in 14th ahead of the US, French, Russian and Italians teams. This was just the beginning. In the 2-man event the Jamaican team shocked the world by beating the Swedish national champions and coming in 10th place. The team has continued to improve and took in 2000, and took gold at the World Push Championships in Monte Carlo in three events and posting the fasted start time at the World Cup.

I drop on to the dubious looking beast, its runners rocking forward and back in the frozen groove and adopt the "kamikaze" position: I lie on my pigeon chest facing forward with helmeted head raised, my chin a few inches from the ice, padded arms clamped to my sides, gloved hands grasping the handles that are level with hips, and my lower legs and trainers held just clear of the track."
The adrenaline rush is subsiding as waves of comforting endorphins overwhelm me. "Yes, it's the same for all of us," says Wallington, who found me prostrate. "But it's about managing the fear. And that's courage."

Imagine sitting in a small metal pod, flying around 90 degree bends at 95mph, just inches away from a frozen surface harder than concrete. That should give you some idea why bobsleigh has been dubbed Formula One on ice. It is hair-raising stuff, with teams of two or four launching a sled down an icy course and trying to steer the quickest path as they hurtle towards the finish.

The first races were run on snow-covered roads. The first club was formed in 1897 and the first purpose-built track was opened in 1902. Initially the sled teams were of five or six, this was reduced to two- or four-person sleighs in the 1930s. Ancient sleighs were wood; modern sleighs combine light metals, steel runners, and an aerodynamic composite body. Competition sleighs must be a maximum of 3.80 m long (4-crew) or 2.70 m long (2-crew), both have a maximum width of 0.67 m.

Greek Bobsleigh Team makes it to the 2005 World Championships News Item - 3/21/2005
Bobsleigh is not normally the sport imagined when thinking of Greece or Greek athletic competition. Yet, as Hellenism spreads to every corner of the world, Greek tastes are shaped by a variety of exotic influences. Sometimes involvement in non-traditional sports represent a way for emigrated Greeks to give a little of themselves and honour Greece. This is how Captain of the Greek bobsleigh team, John-Andrew Kambanis, saw things when he created the team eleven years ago with Greg Sebald. “It’s a new tradition to start”, he says, “while giving me much pride in competing in an international sport that has taken me to the Olympics twice, Nagano and Salt Lake City, and representing Greece in one of the most prestigious winter sports in Europe.”
