As my rent payments for my Union Square apartment (tear) are through I am officially not a New York Resident. That sucks because I feel that my NY residence made me better than the rest of the puff balls out here. I mean, I still rock the Giants Hat, drive like a madman, blast Biggie, and inevitably move the fuck back home but this is still a tough step for me. All told, Santa Monica ran a pretty tight ship on the DMV department. Much friendlier than the New York lot at least. Only issue was that they made me take the drivers test once again. Shit, this could be complicated. Luckily I flirted with the test desk woman (think 47 year old 215lb black woma with purple fingernails longer than my tibula) and she smiled while sliding me the exam "This is the easy one sweetie....". The Bobsled via Bonneville Shoreline The Bobsled is a famous downhill romp, extending from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail down to the homes of the Avenues. Although it's just one descent option from the BST, this little trail is so famous, it deserves its own web page. This twisting, turning downhill runs in a creekbed, 1000 vertical feet over 1.6 miles. This is strictly a downhill don't even dream of riding uphill on the Bobsled. Riding the loop requires good aerobic capability for the uphill and advanced technical ability for the downhill. (The old entry to the Bobsled had about 1/4 mile of steep loose rock at the beginning. The first competition was held in 1898 with five-passenger sleds. The sport spread rapidly to other countries, and by 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe. In 1923 the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing was created to set up rules for the sport. The next year, bobsledding was introduced into the Olympics at Chamonix, France. By 1950 the sport we know today had taken shape and attracts athletes from around the world today. The Sport Bobsled teams are made up of 2 to 4 people. The weight limit for 4 men is 1,389 LB and for a 2 person sled the limit for a 2 person sled is 827 LB. You start out by the team running down the track till they go about 228 feet. Then before they get to the first turn all the team members get into the sled. The captain of the team steers for the rest of the ride down. Then the team member in the back operates the brakes. If it is a 4 member team then the two middle team members lean backward then go forward real fast like snapping forward. That is what gives bobsledding it's name. When they do that it is called "bobbing". The way the bobsleds are made are like this: they have brakes and a streamlined aluminum cowl mounted on the front of the sled. They go up to 118 mph but the average speed is about 60 to 90 mph. The sled itself is made out of fiberglass and look like rockets because of their shapes. He has told the bobsled story before, but never in so leisurely and drawn-out a way as he told it here today among fellow Southerners. It’s about an experience he had in Utah in 2001, the year before the Winter Olympics, when he attended a governors’ conference and was invited to participate in the “Governor’s Bobsled Race.” It was a race not in honor of the governors, but one in which the governors were to actually fold themselves into bobsleds and careen down the mountain at a high rate of speed. He had never seen a bobsled, he says; and could only remember having taken note of the sport while “watching the Wide World of Sports once” and observing with pity as the announcer narrated “the ‘agony of defeat’ when some poor guy careens off the track and flips over three times.” To make a very long and funny story short, if not as funny, Governor Huckabee took a lesson from a 16-year-old member of the Junior Olympic Bobsled Team.
