The aim of our charity is to use cricket to do good. We believe that cricket can be used to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities. For the last 25 years we have used our unique programmes to help young people, in particular, make positive choices about their lives and to help them feel good about themselves. Cricket brings people from different ethnic backgrounds together, makes team mates of individuals who would not normally have met and gives them pride in their community. It diverts young people from crime and anti social behaviour and helps them stay healthy.

Wednesday, April 12, 2006 – The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association will be staging the first ever public demonstration of Blind Cricket at Monday's Senior Games on April 17th. 2006.
Executive Director of the Association Mr. Anthony Avril said the public can expect to see the game which is novel to the island, in full swing around lunch time on that day. He says it will also be an opportunity for the rest of the community to learn more about the game.
“ The best explanation I can give is that it is that the game is similar to 'wole laba' which is under arm bowling not over arm and in blind cricket however the ball has to bounce at least twice before it gets to the batter. it can roll on the ground or bounce twice before it can get to the batter. “
Mr. Avril says blind cricket teams carry the same number of players as normal cricket teams but different rules govern the game. For example every team must include four totally blind players.
“While the ball is different, the bat used during blind cricket is a regular cricket bat, the ball is different, same size but the ball has some pebbles inside so it makes a bit of noise because with blind cricket a lot depends on sound and the players have to listen to the ball and try to follow the sound.”

Interview with Manvendra Singh
Meet the young and energetic Captain of the Indian Blind Cricket Team, Manvendra Singh Patwal. His captaincy recently took India to the finals of World Cup Cricket for Blind held in Pakistan. Manvendra started playing cricket while at school. Little did he know the sport he played for fun would one day change the course of his life. Eyeway correspondent, Guneet Sethi talks to Manvendra and finds out more about him and blind cricket in India.
You have proved many people wrong by becoming the captain of the Indian Blind Cricket team. How exactly did you achieve this level of proficiency?
Yes, about a decade ago it was believed that sport is out of reach for the blind. Times have changed and outdoor games have become an integral part of our lives. My hard work, dedication and complete involvement in the game of cricket have brought me to playing at an international level. I started my cricket career at a very initial stage when there were not many facilities available. Today, I feel happy and proud of the fact that in spite of all the difficulties, I have reached the level of representing my country as a captain of the Indian blind cricket world cup team.
How different is Blind Cricket from regular cricket?

England Blind team now to tour Sri Lanka
The England Blind team will now be touring Sri Lanka to prepare for their World Cup bid in South Africa in 2006, following the cancellation of the planned tour of Pakistan. The recent south asia earthquake has prevented that tour taking place. However, the Pakistanis have been invited to travel to England in May next year for a short ODI series prior to the World Cup. Fresh from their Ashes triumph in 2004, the England Blind team will head to Sri Lanka this month in good spirits. In summer 2002, however, Pakistan beat England 3-1 in a memorable series in England before going on to win the World Cup in December of that year. They beat South Africa in the final. England are now ranked third in the world by the World Blind Cricket Council after the Ashes win.

General Information Blind cricket is similar to traditional cricket with minor modifications.. The ball must be bowled underarm with at least 2 bounces on the pitch either side of the halfway line. Over the last 30 years the ball used for blind cricket has changes significantly from a woven cane ball dunked in water, to a nylon ball and now to a hardened plastic ball. All balls make a rattling sound enabling people with little or no vision to play the sport. The South Australian Blind Cricket Club was formed in 1970 and has fielded teams in the National Championships ever since. In 1998 South Australia had two representatives in the Australian Blind Cricket team for the inaugural World Cup for blind cricket in Deli India. The 2002 World Cup held in Chennai India also contained two South Australian representatives in the Australian blind cricket team with hopes for an increase representation for the next world cup for blind cricket in South Africa in November 2006 Anyone who is vision impaired can play blind cricket from a social level, to a South Australian representative to an Australian Representative. Where there is a batsman who cannot see at all or who has very little sight, a runner is provided for them to act on their behalf when running between the wickets.

NSW Blind Cricket Association Vs Ulladulla UCC President's XI

Ulladulla Lighthouse oval
Ulladulla down NSW by 2 runs
By Daryll Cook A SENSATIONAL middle order partnership by batsman Joel Turner and Ricky Dair saw the Ulladulla Presidents X1 amazingly defeat the NSW Blind cricket team by two runs in the IGA Milton International Disability Day match.
With Australian wicketkeeper Mark Haskett joining the fray, the Ulladulla attack were well rewarded when skipper Ben Felten was trapped by a Peter King googly on 2 after attempting the reverse sweep and with the score at 3 for 60 and Haskett playing shots all around the wicket, the NSW side were looking on dangerous.
A quick collapse that saw two State players run out, gave the locals hope when Troy King was removed for 16 and shortly afterwards Tony Tefler departed on 1 when another fast return by Arron Basile saw the hapless Tefler well out of his crease.
When Haskett brilliantly retired on 40, the locals quickly found another gear and removed Nahmat Ullah 5, Ben Phillips 1, Henry Thineasa 10 and Nathan Difford on 1 before the State team were all out for 197 after 40 overs.
