PITCH BLACK
(Seeing blind cricket is believing in the human spirit) (c) David Astle Shut your eyes and listen to the clues around you. The tingle of bells, the rush of air, a wooden crack, the yells and pounding of feet. This is no ordinary clamour. For those in Category B1 – the totally blind – these are the sounds of a summer weekend, a cricket game on a Melbourne park where the grass is green and the sky is blue though the players neither see nor care. “Bowler,” yells the bowler.
“Keeper,” yells the keeper. The bowler adjusts his aim. He’s a genteel bloke in a cable-knit sweater, his eyes like wet pumice. He calls a second time. The keeper responds. “Ready?” asks the bowler and the blind batsman is ready. “Play,” says Ian Walsh, the bowler, releasing the ball in a whippy underarm, rolling an oversized cat-ball rattling down the pitch. Filled with washers, plus a lead shot for extra weight, the ball bounces once, twice – as it legally must – before settling into a gnarly skid. Mark Curralejo, a “totally” from the Braille XI team, waits to meet the ball. Not far away, a metre behind the wicketkeeper, stands a giant albino called Chris who “calls” the ball for Curralejo. With B3 vision, between stone-blind and less than 10 per cent sight, Chris Stevens can see enough to call “leg side!” and Curralejo contorts his body accordingly. In one fluid swat he sweeps the ball off his toes, sending it jingling towards the fine-leg boundary.

Thwack! The sounds of bat hitting ball resounds through the stadium, as the fielder runs off in the direction of the ball. Yes that's right — you are witnessing a cricket match, with a slight difference. The bowler is bowling underarm, the ball has a rattle like noise as it skims across the turf, and both the batsman and the fielder giving chase have no idea of what the ball looks like or its colour. For they are both blind!
Welcome to the highly competitive world of visually impaired cricket. Little known to the 'sighted' world, blind cricket under the Association for Cricket for the Blind in India (ACBI) has state, zonal and a national team who has participated in three world Cups. And unlike their sighted counterparts, the Indian team are world champions, at least against arch-rivals Australia. As George Abraham, ACBI chairman points out with a mischievous grin, "So far we have never lost a match against Australia."

Blind cricketers secure historic victory for Jamaica - Beat Barbados to win first ever regional tournament
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC): JAMAICA GOT an unbeaten half-century from Iroy Johnson and defeated hosts Barbados by five wickets to win the first ever West Indies Blind Cricket tournament yesterday. Playing at the Carlton Sports Club, Jamaica made 196 for five from 27.1 overs in reply to the Barbados total of 192 for seven from their allotted 35 overs. "It was worked out, it was planned, we just did to Barbados what had to be done to make us champions," winning coach Vivalyn Lattie-Scott told CMC Sport after the game. Boasting a 100 per cent win record entering the final, Jamaica won the toss and decided to field. They quickly reduced Barbados to 56 for six, but a seventh-wicket partnership of 99 between Anthony Cummins (44) and Walter Yearwood (20) helped Barbados to a respectable total.

Finally this week to cricket, but perhaps not the cricket you've been following on ABC Radio and on TV. In this version the Poms actually beat Australia. While the Ashes are being fought over Down Under, in Pakistan the World Cup of Blind Cricket is under way. And as I said, in this type of Game, England defeats Australia, in fact they had their third consecutive victory just this week. To get better acquainted with the game that combines the totally blind with people who are visually impaired, I spoke to Chris Pocock, the Secretary of the Queensland Blind Cricketers Association, who explained how the game is played. Chris Pocock: In international cricket they've got a specially-modified ball, as we do here, but we play here under a separate type of ball, known as our Australian ball, internationally you've got a ball that's manufactured in India that's made of plastic, and it's got ball-bearings inside it.

Ball by Ball - accessible cricket programme at the MCC
Summary: Background to RNIB's project providing accessible cricket programmes at the MCC.
Audio description service
A new and unique service is now available to cricket lovers who have a sight problem. Watching and enjoying the action on a cricket pitch is something that most of us take for granted. Fully sighted cricket fans can indulge themselves completely in the game, applauding with fellow supporters, applauding each catch, or clever stroke of the ball. However, for a blind or partially sighted spectator, the story is different. What should be a momentous day out, can often be spoiled because simple facilities for the benefit of those with sight problems are not made available at most grounds.
RNIB surveyed facilities
RNIB has surveyed facilities at all County grounds, and spoken to many blind and partially sighted supporters at these clubs. Provision for spectators usually is limited to a feed from the local radio station, but unfortunately, most stations switch between coverage of the match to go to other programmes or traffic news, and may only cover small sections of a game. Sadly, many visually impaired supporters currently choose to avoid the problems by simply staying away.
