Winter Biking
In Minneapolis, many bicyclists embrace the winter months by continuing to ride. If you are already biking, or considering winter biking, here are some tips for dealing with the snow, cold temperatures, and motorists:
  • Travel slowly when snow and ice are present. Riding a bike on a street can be challenging, particularly when snow has been compacted by vehicles. Ride in bare patches of pavement when possible. Take turns and curves at a slower speed, and allow longer distances for braking. Also, be sure to plan ahead for extra travel time. Take the off-street trails. Use an old bike in good working condition. Salt and sand can wreak havoc on your treasured bicycle, resulting in rust and breakdowns. Use an older but functional bicycle in the winter months. Two elements of a well functioning winter bike include effective brakes and a well greased chain (wet lube is ideal for snowy conditions). Wider tires with good traction are also essential. Dress in layers.

Some history books will state that Pierre and Ernest Michaux, the French father and son team of carriage-makers, invented the first bicycle during the 1860s. Historians now disagree and there is evidence that the bicycle is older than that. However, historians do agree that Ernest Michaux did invent the modern bicycle pedal and cranks in 1861. Baron Karl Drais von Sauerbronn - Early Bicycles
The German Baron Karl Drais von Sauerbronn invented the "Laufmaschine" or "Running Machine", a type of pre-bicycle. The steerable Laufmaschine was made entirely of wood and had no pedals; a rider would push his/her feet against the ground to make the machine go forward. Sauerbronn's bicycle was first exhibited in Paris on April 6, 1818. The celerifere was another similar early bicycle precursor invented in 1790 by Frenchmen, Comte Mede de Sivrac, however, it had no steering. Penny Farthing
The Penny Farthing is also referred to as the 'High' or 'Ordinary' bicycle, and the first one was invented in 1871 by British engineer, James Starley. The Penny Farthing came after the development of the 'Hobbyhorse', and the French 'Velocipede' or 'Boneshaker', all versions of early bikes. However, the Penny Farthing was the first really efficient bicycle, consisting of a small rear wheel and large front wheel pivoting on a simple tubular frame with tires of rubber.

76. Bicycle Physics
The physics of how you steer a bicycle, and how stop signs interfere with bicycle commuting.
http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~fajans/Teaching/bicycles.html
Physics and Bicycling Combining my work and hobby, I've spent some time investigating the physics of bicycling. Did you know that to turn a bike to the right, you actually push the handlebars to the left? And contrary to the beliefs of most physicists, the stability of a bicycle has little to do with the angular momentum in the wheels. I've written a nontechnical summary , and a technical tutorial paper on the bicycle steering. The calculations in the paper were done in MathCad, and can be downloaded I've also spend some time exploring the effects of stop signs on bicycle commuters. Maintaining the same speed on a road with stop signs as one attains on a road without stop signs is very demanding. For example, on a road with stop signs every 300ft (100m), 500watts of power will result in the same speed as 100 watts would get on a road without stop signs. Since 500watts is far higher than all but racing cyclists can produce, bicyclists on road with stops signs must slow dramatically. These calculations were verified with road tests on California St. in Berkeley, a designated bike route with many stop signs. More details are in this nontechnical article.

Wisconsin State Bike Map
The Wisconsin State Bike Map is a set of eight (8) maps published and distributed through the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin with information provided by WisDOT. This map classifies state and county roads throughout the state in terms of bicycling conditions. It also identifies bicycle trails and mountain bike facilities, and provides contacts for local bicycle route information. Town roads are not rated for their bicycling conditions but are identified with their road names and surface type.
Wisconsin county bike maps
WisDOT also has downloadable bike maps for each of Wisconsin's 72 counties . These county maps come from the Wisconsin State Bike Map. Each county map highlights the most favorable bicycling conditions while presenting the full continuum of roadways - from narrow town roads to US Highways. This approach enables cyclists of all abilities to select their own routes to meet their individual transportation and recreational needs.
