I Hereby Declare January 26th to be International Kirkpatrick MacMillan Day
People, be jubilant! Kirkpatrick MacMillan Day is coming. I hereby declare January 26th to be international Kirkpatrick MacMillan Day I can just see it now. To celebrate Kirkpatrick MacMillan Day, people will buy each other Kirkpatrick MacMillan Day gifts and send each other Kirkpatrick MacMillan cards. Kids will have Kirkpatrick MacMillan pagents in school, and sing songs about Kirkpatrick MacMillan. Who is Kirkpatrick MacMillan you ask, and why is he worthy of such adoration? Kirkpatrick MacMillan was a Scottish blacksmith who lived from 1812-1878. Back in 1839, he was out watching people "riding" bikes, which at that time were driven by kicking the ground with your feet. Essentially hobby horses on wheels. Thrilling, eh? Seemed like there must be a better way. MacMillan mused over that matter a bit, and came up with an idea for the first pedal set-up that could more effectively drive the bike. Using his blacksmith tools, he put his idea into place, and

Welcome to Bicycling Life
We intend this site to focus on the Good News about Bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation in everyday life.
Edlin's Crank An exquisite study by our favorite artist, Taliah Lempert
(Used with permission) Like Edlin, who's crank appears above, you may not have a racing bike (regardless of the pretentious logo), but if you have a bike, any bike, you can join the human race instead of the rat race. A quiet evening ride or a trip to the store does not require a $2000 bike. M any bicycle web sites are "event" oriented. Lots are interested on races or racers. Most are seasonally oriented, and a few are advocacy oriented. We are not disinterested in these things. We are simply more interested in the promotion of cycling as a "normal" means of transportation for every day travel needs as well as recreation and healthy exercise.

Bicycling on Cape Cod Even though our focus is on walking, users have asked us for information about
bicycling on Cape Cod. Usually, these folks are from off-Cape, and thus do not have
access to the printed material available in local bookstores. Many of us who walk
regularly are also bike riders, so we can be of some help. Consider this as a work in
progress, however. First, we will show scanned maps of some of the paved bicycle trails. Then we will add,
one at a time, descriptions of road routes that we know and like. Only experienced bicyclists
should ride the roads of Cape Cod. Family groups in particular should only ride on paved
trails. Everyone should wear a helmet. You only need it once!

Safe Bicycling
Bicycling is one of the most popular ways to get around, whether for recreation, sport or transportation. An estimated 57 million Americans ride bikes ranging from high performance, 18-speed, touring models, to "dirt bikes" equipped with balloon tires—and dozens of variations in between. The Council offers the following tips for safe and enjoyable bicycling:
  • Obey traffic rules. Get acquainted with ordinances. Cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists. Know your bike's capabilities. Remember that bicycles differ from motor vehicles; they're smaller and can't move as fast. But, they can change direction more easily, stop faster and move through smaller spaces. Ride in single file with traffic, not against it. Bicycling two abreast can be dangerous. Bicyclists should stay as far right on the pavement as possible, watching for opening car doors, sewer gratings, soft shoulders, broken glass and other debris. Remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Make safe turns and cross intersections with care. Signal turns half a block before the intersection, using the correct hand signals (left arm straight out for left turn; forearm up for right turn). When traffic is heavy and the cyclist has to turn left, it is best to dismount and walk the bicycle across both streets at the crosswalks.

Although Mother Nature does play a big role (what spectacular weather we had, the success of this ride truly hinges on the continued support of the committed members of the Calumet Crank Club and the bicyclists (some 410 this year) who return year after year from distances near and far to enjoy food, fellowship, and some pretty spectacular views of Lake Michigan and Northwest Indiana. Thanks for supporting bicycling and the Calumet Crank Club. A special thanks to Bobbie and Len Cyzyk for the countless hours they devote to making this event happen. New year's resolutions Posted by Mary DeBacker A couple of years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to bike 200 days, just to see if I could do it. It took me two years to reach the goal: the first year I only biked 175 days, but the following year, I had 200 days by December 1, and ended the year with a total of 206 days. (Last year, I set a goal to have fun and go farther and faster, but ended up having fun with fewer and slower, so it’s on to a new idea.)
