I am not one of those people who is happy only when running 5 miles a day (rain or shine) and climbs a mountain every weekend. My instinct is to relax and enjoy those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, just kicking back with soda and pretzels and beer (or preferably, wine). But this lifestyle eventually leads to boredom, weight gain, and a phone call from your doctor informing you of your high cholesterol blood test result. So I make an effort to keep active. I don't like exercise for the sake of exercise. Jogging and lifting weights, for example, is not my thing. I prefer purpose to my exercise, even if that purpose is only to keep me entertained. So I tend to gravitate towards sports and combining exercise with commuting. I try to bike to work at least once a week. During lunch on Thursdays I play ultimate. On Friday's it's soccer and on the weekends I go sailing. On Mondays and Wednesdays, however, I do something decidedly different. I play bicycle polo.

But as it turns out, Bike Polo, Cycle Polo or Bicycle Polo has been around since the late 1800s. "Mountain biking. BMXing. Unicycling. I've been a bike messenger. I own a bike store. And this is the most fun of all of them, because it encompasses all of them." Norton smiles his jack-o'-lantern smile, revealing plenty of open real estate where his teeth used to be. "And payback is faster," he says. Closer to hockey than its equestrian namesake, bicycle polo has become the sport of choice for the city's bike messenger crowd, an urban gladiator game for the DLWW-tattoo set (i.e., Don't Let Work Win). "It's basically a bunch of dudes who get together and beat the [expletive] out of each other," says Scott Horrigan, a 21-year-old bike messenger who lives in Allston. "It's really just hockey on bikes; it can be rough." Here's how the game works: Three bicyclists line up at either end of the court, with a plastic street-hockey ball sitting alone at center court. Someone yells "Go!" and then it's a race for the ball. Using handmade mallets golf-club shafts jerry-rigged with a PVC pipe on the end or metal pipes with wooden blocks for a mallet head the players try to bat the ball between a pair of cones set up as goals. If a rider's foot touches the ground, he (most players are male) must ride back to center court and touch the boards with his mallet before he can resume play.

Sunday, December 23, 2007 2007, the Year in Polo Well, it's yet another rainy Sunday with no polo being played in Baltimore. Which sucks. It was a great year. We had a lot of new players come out, and had some great games. Those of us that ventured to Pennsylvania and South Carolina for tournaments had a great time. The end of this season also marks the departure of John Sharpe who has moved to Minnesota for the balmy temps and affordable ocean-front properties. Meanwhile, the main field at Northwest Park has been aerated and re-seeded. With any luck it will be in fine shape for the spring season. In the meantime, if we get a decent and unseasonable Sunday, we will try to throw together a game. Otherwise, look for us to start again in Mid-March. Dayling Savings Time kicks in on March 9, 2008.
