However, biathlon usually refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting . Another popular variant is summer biathlon, which combines cross-country running with riflery. Unsurprisingly, biathlon events are broadcast most regularly where the sport enjoys its greatest popularity, namely Germany ARD ZDF Austria ... Some World Cup events are available on the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) The broadcast distribution being one indicator, the constellation of a sport's main sponsors usually gives a similar, and correlated, indication of popularity: for biathlon, these are the Germany-based companies E.ON Ruhrgas

Clean Sweep for McNamee and Toussaint at Youth/Junior Trials; Ten Additional Athletes Nominated to World Championships Team
Coleraine, MN, December 30 Hilary McNamee (Fort Fairfield, ME) and Meagan Toussaint (Madawaska, ME) again swept away the competition today to win their respective categories (Youth Women and Junior Women) at the Youth/Junior World Championships Team Trials. With today's victories, the two athletes from the Maine Winter Sports Center completed a three-for-three sweep of the Trials' competitions. McNamee continued to dominate the Youth Women's category, with another significant margin of victory (1:27) over second place Addie Byrne (Bovey, MN). In the Sprint and Pursuit Format competitions, McNamee won by 58.1 seconds and 2:04.7, respectively. However, In the Relay Format Mass Start (sprint using extra rounds as in a relay) today, Byrne left the shooting range with no penalties while McNamee had one. 'Both the Youth and Junior women shot better than the Junior Men today, with all of the top women either clean or with one penalty. It was windy (gusts up to 20 mph) and they handled it better,' stated Junior National Coach Vladimir Cervenka. Two MWSC athletes, each with one penalty finished behind McNamee and Byrne. Third went to Grace Boutot (Fort Kent, ME), 1:54 back while Kaitlyn Bernard (Fort Kent, ME) finished fourth, 2:34 back.

Archery Biathlon is a blend of cross-country skiing and target archery combined into a single exciting and enjoyable event for athletes of all ages.
Interest in the sport is growing rapidly in North America and in Europe, where it is already well established. A typical event includes a 6 to 12-kilometer ski course with several stops (ends) at the targets.
A simple "hit-or-miss" style target is used at an 18-meter distance from the racers. Athletes carry their bows and arrows in specially-designed backpacks while skiing the course. a Biathlon event, scoring is a combination of ski time and shooting points scored. Biathlon: Why it Matters
Published: Tue Jan 15, 2008 2:00 AM MST Visit the race room of any major ski company in September or October and you will be sure to see the equipment coaches from the major Biathlon teams picking skis. The manufacturers have learned that working with national Biathlon teams is every bit as important as working with top cross country teams. We called Roman Toferer, director of The Thin Red Line (Team Atomic) to discuss the importance of working with Biathlon.
RICK HALLING: Why would a ski company want to put so much time and money into working with Biathlon teams? Why not just focus on cross country?
ROMAN TOFERER: I tell you this so listen to me. Biathlon teams of most countries still have very close and strong ties to their military. This means they have government money that cross country teams do not have. With the government resources, they can do far more research and testing than regular cross country teams.
RICK HALLING: What has this research and testing by the Biathlon teams entailed?

    History
The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called "military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. Following the lead of the international organization, the national governing body was originally the U. S. Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Association. The U. S. Biathlon Association was spun off in 1980.
