Barefooting
I scanned some barefooting shots from when I was a kid. I'm going about 45 mph here, which isn't too bad. But at times I got up to 60 mph doing this stuff. Barefooting is actually easier at higher speeds, but water takes on an entirely new texture when you go that fast. Basically, it becomes rock hard, so learning the proper way to fall is critical. I rarely had soft landings back then, though.

Barefooting the Grand Canyon
A big thank you to Jay Anderson, ultrarunner and RD of the Orange Curtain 100k and 50k races , and Tracy Bahr, a true ultrarunning champion, for allowing me to join in on a Grand Canyon adventure weekend.
If you ask the question, "Can one run down the Grand Canyon barefoot?", the answer would be yes. If you ask the question, "Should one run down the Grand Canyon barefoot?", the answer should be, "Hell no!"
Due to car troubles, we started 6 hours later than we had expected at around 11:30. Even though we didn't know it yet, it meant that we would not have time to do a rim to rim to rim run. Thanks to a nice couple from Tucson for giving us a lift to the trailhead. We crammed 6 people into a compact car. Nothing was going to stop us.
Running down the Bright Angel trail, barefoot, was certainly one of the most difficult things I have done barefoot. Going up the South Kaibab trail barefoot was fine. As I have said a thousand times, going up is always easier than going down on rocky terrain when barefoot.

    I Love to Foot!
Back to Main Page Back to Personal Page My Barefoot Ski Photo Album My Barefoot Skiing Links In the fall of 1995 a friend asked me to go skiing. He suggested that I try barefooting on his boom, and I did. I loved it. It is not as difficult as many perceive it to be, but it does take persistance, and some good instruction is a very good idea. Here are some thoughts on the subject from yours truly. What I enjoy the most is the anticipation. Here I am pictured in August of 1997 with my dad. He and my mom usually stop by once or twice a summer, and watch to see what I have learned.
    • I first went barefooting in August of 1995
    • I tried to barefoot again in August of 1996
    • Efforts in the fall of 1996 resulted in several injuries
    • My wife insisted that I go get professional instruction before continuing I hate it when she is right
    • In May of 1997 I went to Ron Scarpa's Ski School in Florida
      • Ron taught me a solid three point the most important move in barefooting!
      • He got me doing a good tumble turn
      • Ron improved my straight pull form
      • He gave me three back deep attempts and I learned the basics to go backwards
    • Summer of 1997 I worked on three points, front pulls and tumble turning

    Barefooting
I think barefooting is getting a good deal of attention right now.
A few years ago, I was hiking the famous Kalalau trail and a group of women came walking up the trail barefoot. They were 6 feet tall and looked as though they lived outside. Regardless, they were barefoot on a slippery-ledge-fall-down-to-the-rocks-and-die trail with sharp rocks all over it. I also just have to mention that they had serious chin hair. It was quite a sight.
Probably about a month ago, I was reading on Mark Sisson's blog about barefooting . It was on his page about fitness products he liked best where I found vibram's five fingers . I have had the shoes for about 3 weeks now and I have to say that I totally prefer them to my hiking shoes! Actually, all shoes unless I'm in deep grass in the Midwest ( chiggers are horrible) or riding motorcycles or on horseback.

    Lori Powell-Drell
    1999 Hall of Fame Inductee
Lori Powell-Drell is perhaps the most versatile female water skier of all time, competing and holding national titles in both the three-event and barefoot divisions since her elementary school years and world titles in barefooting. Lori learned to water ski when she was six years old on Lake Bonney in Lakeland, Fla. The family enjoyed skiing together so much that they joined the Lakeland Water Ski Club and Lori and her brother, Rick, began to become more and more involved in amateur water skiing. In 1977, Lori entered her first water ski tournament in Caloosa, Fla. She was eight years old. Lori said she remembers getting her first trophy in Junior Girls tricks, but not where she placed. Lori's talent for water skiing was natural. Sensing that she could go far in the sport, Rick Powell became his daughter's diehard instructor. Even though he didn't consider himself a particularly good water skier and had no formal training as a coach, Rick learned all he could to make sure his daughter had the best instruction possible in traditional slalom, tricks and jumping and barefooting. When Lori was interested in learning a new trick, her dad would find our how it was done and then go through the process step by step so he could teach Lori how to do it properly. Lori's skiing continued to improve, and she entered the Southern Regional Championships in 1981. The 12-year-old sensation won first overall in the Junior Girls division placing first in slalom and jumping and second in tricks. Her performance qualified her for the 1981 National Championships where, as a relative newcomer, she placed second in tricks and overall in her division.
