Festival
The Mountaineer in Keene Valley, NY will be hosting the sixth annual Adirondack Backcountry Skifest
Local backcountry gurus and Cloudsplitter Mountain Guides in Keene Valley will lead guided tours for all ability levels. Backcountry Magazine will host a presentation Saturday evening at Cascade Ski Touring Center on Rt. 73 between Keene and Lake Placid. ‘We are incredibly lucky to have such a great group of local and guest guides for this event who are willing to come out and share their depth of experience and knowledge with other skiers,’ says the Mountaineer’s Vinny McClelland. Novice skiers can join Emilie Drinkwater and Jim Sausville for an introductory tour and learn the basics of backcountry skiing. Intermediate skiers can traverse the High Peaks through Avalanche Pass with David Thomas-Train and Tony Goodwin or head for a favorite glade or backcountry trail with Colin Loher and Bill Dodd. Experienced backcountry skiers can join a tour of one of the High Peaks' challenging slides with Jesse Williams and Jeremy Haas. Major sponsors for this year’s event include Primaloft and Backcountry magazine. Garmont, Scarpa, Voile, Black Diamond, K2 and Karhu have generously provided the latest demo equipment for event participants, and additional sponsors include Mammut and Marmot. The Skifest is a benefit event, with proceeds supporting the New York State Ski Education Foundation’s Nordic racing programs and the Adirondack Ski Touring Council, stewards of the Adirondack Park’s backcountry ski trail system, including the famous Jackrabbit Trail.

Being a backcountry skier means being able to ski efficiently...uphill and downhill. It also means being able to travel safely in winter environments. So our ski courses cover the range of free-heel ski technique, as well as winter route selection, weather, thermo-regulation, snow science and avalanche assessment, group dynamics and leadership skills as they are germane to the backcountry experience.

Skiing Off-Piste on Ungroomed and Unmarked Terrain
Backcountry skiing or snowboarding is exploring ungroomed and unmarked terrain either just outside ski area boundaries or in remote areas. In Europe, this is often called “off-piste” skiing. This is definitely one version of "extreme" skiing and riding. Backcountry skiing and snowboarding on ungroomed and unmarked terrain should only be done by experienced skiers and riders who understand the dangers of avalanches and have appropriate equipment to deal with snow slides and unexpected emergencies. Other potential dangers include exhaustion, getting caught in unexpected blizzards and losing one's way.

Management buy-out for Dynastar?
Rumours about the future of Dynastar have been circulating for the past couple of years. The Sallanches (Haute-Savoie) based company, part of the Quiksilver stable (NYSE:ZQK), is the last major ski manufacturer in France. Their factory has a capacity to produce 450,000 skis per year. Quiksilver has seen its share price plummet faster than a downhill skier over the last quarter. Posted by davidof at 07:30 AM

I have attempted this summit three times and never had much success. The access has always been to sled up to around 4500 feet and start touring up the east side, the terrain has always been really steep and committing. Each time I have gotten to a spot where it's time to push on but the terrain and conditions have told me to turn around. So we have made it progressively higher but never to the summit. I discovered a plowed road that gives access to the North Cranberry creek. Judging by the maps it looked like a longer approach but a safer one. I had thought we would ski back out the way we toured in. But as the nine km of valley took longer and longer to tour up I began wondering if I did want to come back out this way. Finally after 4.5 hours we gained the col (where the red dots begin), by this time we were all beat but so much closer to the summit that we pushed on. Winds have played havoc with the alpine and the tour up the ridge was like walking on Mars. Bullet proof frozen waves of snow. But we pushed on and soon enough we were skinning and boot packing up the summit. Wow years of waiting and now finally I was standing on the summit, not for long since it was 4.30 and we had a ways to go.
