Autocross Series Prepare to Autocross! This year, the Rocky Mountain Chapter has scheduled 6 autocross events. Unfortunately, with the loss of the DIA location as an autocross venue, our schedule has been abbreviated due to a limited number of sites that we can run on. Participation is open to everyone, no matter what your ability or car preparation. Our focus is improving performance-driving skills, with some friendly competition added in. This year, you will need to participate in all but one of the “Series” events (4 out of 5 with the current schedule of 5 events) to be eligible for a year-end trophies in your class. But, like last year, everyone is welcome to participate in the Driver’s Championship to be eligible for that events prizes, the only difference is that this event will also count as a “Series” event as well. A note to previous participants: You will need to re-class your vehicle, as a few system changes have been made since last year. Series Events Series events are events that you may earn trophies for each event, in each class for that day, in addition to qualifying for year-end trophies. One will get both runs in the morning as well as the afternoon. The morning runs will allow you to get familiar with the course and to practice performance-driving and autocross skills. After morning runs, we will break for lunch, which will be provided. In the afternoon, we will have the competition runs for event-day trophies.

In an autocross, a single car is timed while it negotiates a paved course, the object being to establish the lowest possible elapsed time among cars in its class. Cars are classified according to the level of preparation and relative performance,with each car getting three or four attempts to set its best time. In an autocross, only one car at a time is allowed on the course, which is typically set up with pylons on a large, paved parking lot in such a way as to emphasize handling and keep speeds low. These features remove the hazards of wheel to wheel racing and make for a relatively safe sport. The only safety equipment required is a helmet, seat belts, and a car in proper running condition. While there are classes for all types of cars from stock econo-boxes to fully race-prepared formula cars, most cars are stock or slightly modified sporty streetcars. Autocrosses, also known as Solo2 events, tend to be fairly social events with plenty of time between runs to adjust tire pressures, help man thecourse, watch the competition, or just shoot the breeze.
