A Mini Cooper participating in an autocross event Autocross is a form of motorsports that emphasizes safe, low-cost competition and active participation. An autocross is a timed competition where drivers navigate one at a time through a temporary course marked by traffic cones , rather than racing on a track with multiple other cars, as in road racing or oval racing . Autocross tends to place more emphasis on car handling and driver skill than on sheer horsepower, and events typically have many classes which allow almost any vehicle, from economy sedans to purpose-built vehicles, to compete. Speeds are slower in absolute terms when compared to other forms of motorsports, usually not exceeding highway speeds, but the activity level (measured in discrete turns per minute) can be higher than even Formula One due to the large number of elements packed into each course. Autocross courses are typically 40 to 70 seconds in length. In addition to being a national-level motorsport in its own right, autocrossing is a good way to learn skills that transfer to road racing, as drivers learn vehicle control and club ethics.

Going Cone Dodging For those unfamiliar, autocrossing is an event where cars are timed as they run through a cone-lined course, which is usually set up in a generously sized parking lot. Cars are broken down by class, based on platform and modifications. Times between competitors usually split hairs based on tenths, if not hundredths, of a second.

Autocross/Solo II Autocross is an extremely inexpensive and safe way to participate in competitive motorsports. In general, any safe, street legal vehicle can compete without any significant modifications (although heavily modified vehicles may be at a disadvantage due to the rules structure a heavily prepared, supercharged drag racer is unlikely to make a good and competitive autocross car.) Autocross and Solo II events are "Time Trial" style competitions; there is no wheel to wheel racing involved, as cars are sent out one at a time, or at least spaced out so that they should not come into any contact with each other. These events are derived from the original Gymkhana competitions from 50s and 60s. Today, an event called a Gymkhana is usually a "fun" event, with slow speeds and silly tricks. An event called an Autocross or Solo II is usually a serious competition, with speeds perhaps as much as 70mph in large lots or on airport runways. In general, a course is laid out using traffic cones; time penalties will charged for disturbing cones. For most clubs the penalty is 2 seconds per cone, although for some it may be 1 second. In the Discussion Area you will find an discussion topic devoted to Autocross.

Autocrossing a Fiat X1/9
My primary hobby for many years was autocrossing my '81 Fiat X1/9, "Pyrite", and its predecessor, "Colibri", a '79, both of which were prepared for SCCA's D Street Prepared class. (After I painted Pyrite, I always meant to change the name since it was no longer meaningful once the car was no longer gold, but somehow the old name stuck. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions anyway!) I've driven Pyrite to nationals (held in Kansas) twice, and garnered a second-place (DSPL) trophy one of those times. I actually won DSPL once, back in '89, but it was in Bill Condrashoff's X1/9, not my own. Lately, I'm semi-retired and only run occasional local events (I got tired of the long drive to Kansas. :-) Sad news: Pyrite is about to be retired as well. At just short of 250k miles, some of it on the east coast and other snowy areas, the underside of the body is just too rusted out. Current plan is to transplant Pyrite's race parts into a red-over-brown '86 body. I finally got the new car! But what should I name it?

SUMMARY
Autocross is the most entry-level form of sports car racing
and has taken place all over the world since the 1950's. Participants simply drive as fast as possible one at a time against the clock on a twisty course laid out with cones on a large paved surface. Top speeds are usually less than 65 miles per hour because the activity is intended to encourage car control and driver skill at real-world speeds. NASA Mid-Atlantic has held autocrosses since 1998. Our events are open to any street licensed driver in nearly any street or race car , utilizing a classification system designed to produce close competition. Victory and defeat are often separated by mere thousandths of a second. Entry fees start at $30 for 6 to 10 timed runs.
Since 2006 we have also held significantly faster autocrosses ("Circuitcrosses") on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course at VIRginia International Raceway, for double championship points. Novice classroom sessions first ("Circuitschools") are required for beginners. Circuitcross entry fees start at $70 per driver. In 2007 we ran
