Nations increasing involvment in F1 Teams One way or another, a trend has begun in Formula 1 teams where increasingly countries have become involved in the teams. After the sale of a third of the shares of the McLaren Mercedes team to the country of Bahrain last year, the Spyker team was bought out to the tune of 50 percent by a consortium led by Vijay Mallya, the Indian tycoon. Although this is not precisely the country of India buying the team, Mallya's ambitions are clear by the name he gave the new team: Force India . Mallya has been pushing for an Indian Grand Prix, and the team is seen as part of a strategy toward that goal. Today, the Renault team announced that it has a new sponsorship deal with the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Gauteng is the economic region of South Africa that boasts the cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, which contributes more than 34% of the country's GDP. "Following the success and exposure generated by the ING Renault F1 Team’s Roadshow in Johannesburg’s Sandton suburb last July, which attracted some 80,000 spectators," Renault said in a statement, "the Gauteng Provincial Government hopes to use this new partnership as a platform for increasing its international profile, and generating further inward investment."
