Blues Win Championships Written by Mike Gaffney Thursday, 18 October 2007 The St. Louis Blues won the Division III Championship at the USAFL National Tournament held in Louisville, Kentucky on October 13-14, 2007. The Blues started pool play with a strong performance, winning by 7.5-47 to 0.4-4 over the host club, the Louisville Kings. St. Louis then beat the Arizona Hawks 8.7-55 to 2.2-14, setting up a match with the Cincinnati Dockers (also 2-0 in pool play) to determine who would get the chance to play for the Division III championship. Earlier in the season, the Blues met Cincinnati in a MAAFL match-up in St. Louis, winning comfortably by a 17.15-117 to 6.5-41 margin. But this was neutral ground, and the Dockers brought a strong side. After a tightly contested first half, St. Louis rallied to hold the Dockers scoreless in the second half, and the Blues earned a trip to the Division III final against the Las Vegas Gamblers. Like St. Louis, Las Vegas had also emerged from pool play undefeated, with comfortable wins over the Kansas City Power, Florida Redbacks, and Baton Rouge Tigers.

AFL History
The first game
A match between Scotch and Melbourne Grammar schools was held on August 7, 1858. This is generally considered the first game of what we now call AFL (Australian Rules Football), though the rules for this match would have been rather crude. There may have been earlier games of 'football' as the colonial Australians meshed their knowledge of Gaelic Football, Rugby and Soccer. The AFL rules evolved gradually over the early matches, probably over a few beers at the local.
Victorian Football Association (VFA)
The game developed rapidly, drawing large crowds and taking up pages in the paper with discussion of upcoming games and results. The Victorian Football Association was formed in 1877. The original clubs were Hotham (North Melbourne), Melbourne, Geelong, Carlton, Albert Park (South Melbourne), St Kilda, Essendon and East Melbourne.
The first International
An English team toured Australia in 1888. After some coaching in England, and more after they arrived, they went on to play 25 matches in which they won 14. A return tour by Australian players was planned but did not eventuate. Thus the international expansion of the game died out and it it went on to become a unique game to Australia.
Victorian Football League (VFL)
The game continued to develop and new teams were included in the VFA. In 1897, some of the stronger teams from the VFA formed a breakaway league, which became known as the Victorian Football League (VFL). The original clubs of the newly formed VFL were Collingwood, South Melbourne, Essendon, Melbourne, Fitzroy, Geelong, St. Kilda and Carlton. They played their first matches on May 18, 1897.

The person who did the most to establish Australian football was Tom W. Wills. Melbourne born, he was sent to England at age 14 where he attended Rugby School in the Midlands. The game was initially planned to be simpler than the complicated Rugby game, and of less "vigour and roughness" of Rugby and the other school games. For Australian footy fans, nothing is more important to them than seeing their club battle towards the Grand Final. Throughout the last 100 years or so Australian Rules (AFL) and Rugby League have dominated weekly sporting attention in their stronghold cities. The southern states were the domain of the locally devised Victorian Rules game, while NSW and Queensland adopted Rugby League from England. This left Australia in a unique situation amongst the ‘football' playing nations - it was not dominated by one code. In the two most populated cities, Sydney and Melbourne, the sporting-minded could enjoy summer cricket battles between NSW and Victoria. But during winter, the two biggest states could only look across the border and see a football divide. It seemed the only way this would ever change, would be in the unlikely event of one code taking over the other's territory. However, in 1933 the administrators of both games thought they had the answer - they resolved to create a new ‘all-Australian football game' incorporating the best features of Australian Rules and Rugby League. In Sydney a secret trial match involving players from both codes was held to test the new game. This though wasn't the first occasion there had been talk of a merged game. At various times in the late 1800s Sydney's rugby authorities were faced with growing popularity of the ‘Australian game'. To counter it, they toyed with rule changes to eliminate scrums, allow the taking of fair catches (marks) in the air and punt kicks for goal. The Rugby Football Union in England though, who the NSWRU was bound to follow, would not countenance such changes.
