The AFL has forged a partnership with Australian Volunteers International (AVI) to provide a National Football Operations Manager for AFLPNG over the next two years. The new operations Manager Peter Cates commenced in early February. January/ February saw eight boys travel to Cairns to take part in the Queensland Country Kookaburra’s selection trials. Stannis Susuve, Ali Pinda, and John James were all successful in making the Queensland Under 18 Kookaburras team. All of the boys have remained in Queensland playing club football for 2007 under AFLPNG’s scholarship scheme. Newly appointed AFL Development Coordinator for the Momase Region, Mr. Cornelius Papua (Connie) commenced work in Lae on the 01st of March. Rev Moses Kar was reappointed as Development Coordinator for the Highlands and continues his good work throughout that Region. A number of Permanent and volunteer staff Appointments were made throughout March and April and AFLPNG now has a group of energetic and enthusiastic staff across the length and breadth of PNG.

Australian Rules Football Players leap high to mark the ball The game that is now known as Australian Rules football was created in 1858.
Cricketers, T homas Wills and his cousin, Henry Harrison, and two others W.J. Hammersley and J.B. Thompson invented the football game to keep themselves, and other cricketers, fit during winter.
The Melbourne Football Club was formed on August 7, 1858, and in the same year, the first recorded match was played between teams from two Melbourne schools, Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar.
Forty players on each side using a round ball played a match that lasted for more than five hours. The game attracted large crowds of spectators then, and continues to do so today. Tom Wills , one of the founders of Australian Football, returned to Australia in 1857 after being at school in England. Wills had been the football captain of Rugby School and a brilliant cricketer. The Geelong Football Club was formed in 1859. In1866 an updated set of rules was written and competition started. Go here for more about the history of the game from

1883-today: The radical history of Aussie rules football
tags: September 11th, 2006 by John. A history of Aussie rules football and its intersection with working class politics since the first football strike in 1883. Scabs, coppers, strikes and footy
Despite what the corporate managers who run the Australian Football League and programmes like "The Footy Show" would have most supporters think, Australian Rules football and politics do go together and have always done so. Football has never existed in a vacuum from the rest of society and footballers have often being willing to fight for their rights. The following snippets, supplied by "The Footy Philosopher" and his "Apprentice", aptly illustrate this point. ▫ The first recorded strike in football occurred in 1883 when two Carlton players were suspended by the Carlton committee for misbehaving on a trip to Maryborough. In response, nine players refused to play any further games and the team's fortunes slipped. ▫ On July 29, 1911 several St Kilda players went out on strike in protest at the club committee's banning of a former player and a present player's father from the change rooms prior to the match. The inner club wrangling saw Carlton win the following week's match by 20 goals.

What is Australian Rules Football?
Australian Rules Football, or Aussie rules, is a fast moving game played with an oval ball on an oval pitch, between two teams of 18 players. It takes place on an outdoor pitch which is 185m long, with four posts at either end. There are no official positions on the field, and players can start the game wherever they like on the pitch. Even though it can be quite a rough sport, players don't wear protective clothing.

Introduction
Australian Rules Football (ARF) is a game unique to the Australian population in regards to the skills and rules involved. It can be compared to many team sports with regard to the physical requirements and energy systems involved in competition. The development of all three energy systems- aerobic, anaerobic and the lactic, is regarded as desirable in physical preparation to compete in ARF (Telford et al 1989 and Minikin 1990). Typically players must repeat many short (5-10 seconds) bursts of intense (near maximal) effort repetitively through the course of a game, with periods of lighter intensity effort interspersed. Physiological testing of players can be beneficial to both the players and coach to indicate individual strengths and weaknesses, and also as an objective measure of training responses (Ellis et al 1998). Over the course of a game of ARF the player typically performs 100 or more sprints (Douge 1982). Some variability in the amount of running efforts have been reported particularly for different playing positions on the field. Wadley et al (1988) reports these high intensity efforts account for around 20 per cent of the game time, with average sprint distances of approximately 20 metres. The work to rest ratio is variable depending on the state of play and positional requirements. This requirement of repeated effort is similar to sports such as rugby, soccer, netball, hockey, basketball, squash and tennis. Besides the ability to reproduce short bursts of intense effort the player must be able to sustain performance over the length of the game, 100 minutes (4 x 25 minute quarters).
