Introduction to Australian Rules Football
What is Australian Rules Football ?
Australian Rules Football (also "Aussie Rules" or "footy") is a physical contact sport. It is a form of football with roots traceable from early forms of Rugby and Gaelic football, but it is uniquely Australian. Its rules were codified in 1858, and probably predate all other modern forms of football, such as American, Canadian, Rugby Union and League, Association (Soccer) and Gaelic football. Today it is a multi-million dollar business, with a National Competition and numerous smaller leagues. Interest in the game is generally at an all time high within Australia, yet despite this, some parts of Australia are still lukewarm in support of their team in the AFL, and the game has yet to take a firm hold overseas.

Where is Aussie Rules played ?

Invented in Melbourne , capital of the state of Victoria, in the late 1850s, the game was initially known as Melbourne, or Victorian, rules football and was an amalgam of various football rules that were in use at English public (independent) schools. Although Australian rules football is one of several football sports played today in Australia, the national professional Australian Football League (formerly known as the Victorian Football League), is the the country's most popular sports competition in terms of attendance and television viewing. (Since Mar 10th 2007) Happy New Year from the Lions!! Now let's play some footy! - Thursday, January 17, 2008 Now that we're tired of our Christmas presents and our hangovers have worn off from the New Year, it's time to think about football . The Lions are determined to go one better from last year and reclaim the Division 1 USAFL National Championship.
New President Blankenship is organizing a busy 2008 football calender year for the Lions as we prepare for the Nationals in Denver. Stay tuned for the kickoff party at a yet-to-be-determined locale and time. Keep watching emails and the website for training information. Training has unofficially begun for most players; however coach Schenk will assemble the troops soon enough for everyone's favourite Dog Beach team fitness regime. New players and all interested onlookers should contact the President for all questions/ information/romantic propositions. All are welcome to join and cheer the Lions in 2008!!

Invented by Australians, it is played mainly in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Every Saturday afternoon in winter, hundreds of thousands of spectators flock to the major club competitions in South Australia, Canberra, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Teams from Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane also compete with leading Melbourne teams. Australian Rules football is a game of great pace and spectacle. Players drive the ball back and forth with long kicks and quick hand passes and stop it with high catches called marks. An Australian Rules football team consists of 18 players and 2 interchange players, who can replace other players . During a match, each team tries to score as many points as possible. It also tries to prevent the opposition from scoring. A goal counts as six points and a behind as one point. The team that scores the highest number of points wins the match.
