Not until the sixties, that non-Filipinos were allowed to witness and learn the Filipino combative arts. It was normally passed down within a family, or on a strict student-to-student basis. By Maestro Joe Jimenez Arnis de Mano cannot be verbally described to get a true sense of it's dynamics. It must be experienced. Like a song, it requires a sense of rhythm and flow. If you can't communicate the rhythm and melody, one cannot relate to the music.
Arnis de Mano (harness or armor of the hand) movements are angular and circular. Motion is continuous, that is those who have acquired or mastered the flow. Maestro JoJo Abueg has the most remarkable flow that I have witnessed.
Don't look for crashing boisterous movement or sound. Arnis de Mano is more surgically applied thus the old Filipino adage "de-fanging the snake".
Although noted for its weaponry, Arnis de Mano is more. If you can understand the concepts of the use of a weapon, then you can relate the same principles to empty hand or "kun tao" (way of the hand). In its full curriculum of training it has footwork, weaponry, empty hands, power, flow, rhythm, and dance.

Modern Arnis is the system of Filipino martial arts founded by the late Remy Presas as a self-defense system. His goal was to create an injury-free training method as well as an effective self-defense system in order to preserve the older Arnis systems. The term Modern Arnis was also used by Remy Presas' younger brother Ernesto Presas to describe his style of Filipino martial arts ; since 1999 Ernesto Presas has called his system Kombatan . It is derived principally from the traditional Presas family style of the Bolo (machete) and the stick-dueling art of Balintawak , with influences from other Filipino and Japanese martial arts.

Arnis: A Question of Origins
by Bot Jocano The term arnis evokes a number of reactions from people every time it is mentioned in a conversation. Some people start fanning their hands in the air, imitating the distinctive movements of the two-stick (doble baston) training method. This image of arnis is one of the most popular to the layman. A second reaction, and quite as common as the first, is the question: "Saan ba talaga galing ang arnis?" (Where did arnis really come from?) Alternatively, "Di ba, sa atin nanggaling ang arnis?î (Isn't it that arnis comes from us?) is a question also heard. This article is an attempt to critically examine the roots of one of the martial arts of the Philippines, arnis. It must be noted that in no way does this article claim to be the final say on the origins of arnis. It is actually a preliminary look, a start if you will, into re-examining carefully the origins of an art form. Arnis, also known as

Brief Arnis History Information
Arnis is an ancient Filipino Martial Arts also known as Kali or Eskrima. Originally known as Arnis de Mano, or harness of the hand, the art incorporated empty handed fighting as well as techniques with a variety of weapons specializing in short sticks and knife techniques. During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, the practice of Arnis was banned. However, in order to preserve the art the Filipino people hid the techniques in their folk dancing. They later used the art to defeat the Spaniards and free their land from Spanish rule over 300 years ago.
Jay Haynes Information
Shihan Haynes originally began his Arnis training under Guro Eric Alexander in 1991. Eric Alexander is a 5th degree Black Belt under the late Professor Remy Presas. Shihan Haynes trained personally with Guro Alexander and in seminars with Professor Remy Presas, the founder of Modern Arnis, and continued to train until 2006. At that time, Shihan Haynes was introduced by Professor Ken Baker to Grand Master Federico Lazo (who is the founder of Luzviminda Arnis) and his son, Master Ricky Lazo. Shihan was so astounded by the Arnis technique that he learned, that he now studies and teaches the Luzviminda Arnis system.

The World Modern Arnis Alliance was established for a two-fold purpose. Our first goal is to further the growth of Arnis throughout the world. Secondly, in keeping with the example set by Remy Presas, our intent is to set the highest technical standards possible for the global Arnis community. We will achieve this by designing specific training programs that will advance the progression of our art while developing maximum student proficiency. For those who do not have immediate access to an instructor and who are training on their own, rank promotion is still possible. Students will have access to a directory of black belts, schools, and instructors in the Modern Arnis community. These people will be available to periodically assist students with their training in preparation for their advancement. Geographical constraints will not be a deterrent to the growth of Modern Arnis. In addition we have created a "Student Registry" so that each member will have a record of their rank as they progress through each level. This will prevent any discrepancy as to what belt level a student or instructor has earned. Their credentials will be available for verification.

Arnis and Escrima are basically the same martial art as Kali, the different names signify which part of The Philippines the art comes from and some minor variations of technique. Kali is unusual in that it teaches students stick fighting first and then open handed fighting as its open hand techniques are based on its stick fighting techniques. Kali is therefore commonly perceived as a stick fighting style, but unarmed combat is given equal emphasis. Most of the unarmed techniques are strikes, but leg and hip techniques to off-balance or throw an opponent are also used. The Spanish Espada y Daga was brought into Kali, and thus many schools will also teach sword and knife techniques. Similar Styles: Kalari Payat - This Indian style teaches more weapons than Kali, but open hand, knife, stick, and sword are foremost. Thaing (Bando) - A style from Burma (now Myanmar) in which knife fighting is emphasised but stick, sword and open hand are also taught.

WHAT ARE THE FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS?
This is no short answer for this question. There are some 7,000 islands and 77 major ethnolinguistic groups, 244 subgroups each with their own central cultures in the Philippine archipelago. Everybody at one time and place had a local martial art and their own name, all of which changed within different styles, schools, and eras. Some added other names to get more students or connect to old lines of teaching. Arnis is now the National Martial Art in the Philippines. The use of sticks, daggers, and short swords has been practiced in the Philippines since the beginning of history. At Triangle Kung Fu Arnis Academy , we teach Modern Arnis . Modern Arnis is a style of Filipino stick fighting founded and developed by Grand Master Remy Presas. Modern Arnis focuses on the ability to translate from weapon to empty hand and from empty hand to weapon. This is what the Professor terms as the FLOW . Through Modern Arnis, the individual will learn how to attack and defend using single stick, double stick, swords and daggers, trapping hands, joint locks and throws, and takedowns. Thus, finding and learning to go with the flow enables the individual to face a number of different fighting scenarios.

Kali/Escrima/Arnis
Intro
Kali, Escrima, and Arnis are all terms for the native fighting arts of the Philippines, specifically the arts that use weapons. Arnis is a Northern Term, Escrima more Central, and Kali is from the South. In this view, the terms just refer to indigenous weapons fighting systems. Arnis would be the term used in Northern Luzon, Escrima from Manila through the central islands, and Kali on Mindanao. People who use this definition tend to say that the words don't matter - every village, and often every master, has a distinct style, and that's what the important thing is - "do you study Illustrisimo, Caballero, or Cabales style?" Not "do you study escrima or kali?"
Origin
Philippines
History
Kali is an older art than Escrima or Arnis, and more comprehensive. Escrima and Arnis were developed as streamlined, simplified ways to teach people to fight the Spanish invaders. Hence, Kali is more of a "warrior's art" while Escrima and Arnis are "soldier's arts". Kali is usually considered to have 12 areas of combat, with Escrima containing 8 or 9 of them, and Arnis 4 to 6.
