Martial arts A beginner's guide to archery Last modified: Fri Aug 3 07:57:57 2007 This article explains what you need to know to get started in the sport/martial art of archery. It discusses equipment, how to shoot, and the different types of archery that are practised in the UK. Please don't buy anything on the strength of what you read here it requires considerable expertise to select the right equipment, and isn't cheap.
What you need
To do archery, four things are essential: a bow of some sort, at least one arrow (but more is better!), a place to shoot, and something to shoot at. Most archery clubs practice in a field and use a straw boss (a round straw target about four inches thick and four feet across) to shoot at, although there are many other possibilities. I sometimes practice in my garden by shooting at cardboard boxes stuffed with old newspapers (but there's nothing beyond my garden other than a soil embankment forty feet high I wouldn't recommend shooting in the garden if you have neighbours to the rear). Most archery clubs have some equipment available for beginners to practice with, because archery equipment is expensive, and it's very easy to buy the wrong stuff if you don't know what you're about.

Congratulations to Tom Havel. Tom competed in the Illinois Senior Olympic Games. Not only did he take First place in his age division, but he set a new State record for that division. His score of 792 for a 900 round is quite commendable and will probably stand until he competes next year. This proves that hard work and perseverence pays off.
Let's have a round of applause for Tom. Way to go!!!

Early History
Archery is one of the most ancient of sports. During the paleolithic era (35,000 to 8,000 B.C.), the use of bow and arrow for hunting probably developed independently in many places throughout the world. By definition, there's no documentary evidence of archery competitions during the prehistoric era. But certainly, during that long expanse of time, now and then some ancient hunter who boasted about his skill with the bow must have been challenged to a contest by someone equally proud of his skill. There probably wasn't much to brag about. While an arrow can be launched by a bow with greater speed than any missile can be thrown, primitive bows are not very accurate. Western movies greatly exaggerated the skill of Native American bowmen; their hunting ability was based much more on skill and stealth in tracking than on marksmanship. The bow first entered military history in 2,340 B.C., when Sargon of Akkad in northern Babylonia conquered the Sumerians of southern Babylonia with an infantry made up mostly of archers. From that time on, many ancient peoples used archery in warfare in varying ways and with varying degrees of success.

Archery Safety. Home : Archery Safety: General Archery Safety Rules
NEVER point a bow and arrow at another person. NEVER shoot an arrow straight up into the air. You can end up hitting another person or yourself. NEVER shoot an arrow off into the distance where you cannot see where it will land. Again, you could end up hitting another person. Only use archery equipment in places that are especially set up for target practice - such as indoor and outdoor target ranges. Targets should be set up to ensure that no one can be accidentally hit by a stray arrow. Allow at least 20 yards behind the targets and a 30 degree "cone of safety" on each side of the shooting lane. Try to place targets against a hill or rising terrain as a safety measure. If you are looking for a lost arrow behind a target, always leave your bow leaning against the target face so that it will be seen by other archers coming up. If possible, have one archer from your group stand in front of the target to prevent anyone from shooting. On field archery or 3-D courses, be sure to stay on the marked path and travel only in the direction in which the targets are laid out while shooting is in progress. Going backwards on the trail or across an unmarked area could place you in the path of a flying arrow, resulting in serious injury.

Bow hunting and archery are as popular now as they ever were. With a long history dating back to such notables as Richard the Lionheart on up to early Native American history, the recurve and compound bows that modern day archers have come a long way since ancient times. Today, the simple piece of sapling with a strand of sinew has been replaced by sturdier materials with weights, pulleys and other engineering marvels that enhance shooting range and accuracy. And the arrows are not anything that Robin Hood would recognize.
