The Virginia General Assembly is considering legislation that would make cockfighting a felony. Under current law, cockfighting is illegal only if gambling is involved - and then it's just a misdemeanor. The bill also would make it a misdemeanor to attend an animal fight. As it now stands, just attending a dog fight is not illegal. Attorney General Bob McDonnell is backing the bill. He says the Vick case has helped call attention to the scope of animal fighting and to deficiencies in Virginia's laws. "The Michael Vick incident put a spotlight on this," said John Goodwin, who manages the animal-fighting campaign for the Humane Society of the United States. "I don't think a lot of people understood how cruel and barbaric it is." Last spring, authorities uncovered a dogfighting operation that Vick bankrolled in Surry County. Vick, who starred at Warwick High and Virginia Tech before moving on to the NFL, is serving 23 months on federal dogfighting charges. With Vick serving as a poster child, advocates working against animal fighting have a renewed vigor at the state Capitol. Lawmakers are eyeing all sorts of new restrictions, but there is one comprehensive bill that is gathering powerful support.
