1. Animal Fighting
Those in the profession of dog fighting overbreed pit bulls, contributing to the large number of animals languishing in shelters throughout the country.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting aficionados claim that the bullfight is a battle to the death in which either participant, bull or matador may die. In reality, before the match even starts, the bull doesn't have a fighting chance to win.
Before the fight begins, bulls languish in pens that lack sunlight, food, and water. They are commonly fed laxatives or drugs to debilitate them. In fact, scientists from Spain's Salamanca University found that one in five bulls had been given anti-inflammatory drugs, which could disguise injuries that could weaken the animals' strength prior to fighting. They are also stabbed in the backs before release into the arena.
A traditional bullfight consists of three stages. During the first stage, picadors, men atop heavily padded, blindfolded horses, approach the bull and drive pics into his neck muscles to begin the flow of blood to weaken the bull. The banderillos come next, working on foot to place "their banderillas (brightly adorned, barbed sticks) in the bull's shoulders in order to lower its head for the eventual kill." The blades of these spears continue to move and dig into the bull's back throughout the fight, causing bleeding and tissue damage. The bull may also suffer internal bleeding.

      Animal Fighting: The Final Round
The Final Round campaign exposes animal fighting (whether with dogs or gamecocks), helps law enforcement personnel combat it, strengthens laws against it, and assists citizens who want to rid their communities of it. In recent years we have seen an increase in animal fighting, both in urban settings and in rural areas. To combat this trend, The HSUS provides educational materials to assist people who want to eliminate animal fighting in their community and who want to strengthen laws against this cruel form of entertainment. Citizen letters remain the single most effective tool for change, so we provide both background information and sample letters for use. You may have some ideas of your own. If they are successful, please share them with us. By using our informational materials and your own creativity, you can foster public awareness in your community about the brutality and danger involved in animal fighting. Illegal animal fighting is a blood-sport in which animals are specifically bred and trained to fight each other within an enclosed pit or ring, for the benefit of individuals who place bets on the animal they believe will win. The fights are extremely brutal, with animals often fighting to the death. In addition to the extremely violent nature of the animal cruelty involved, illegal animal fighting events almost always include other criminal activity, such as gambling, drugs, prostitution and illegal firearms. (Large amounts of money exchange hands during these gambling events, and where there is money, there are guns and other weapons present.) Additionally, it is quite common for children to be used during these events, often as runners for the betting process. This brings up the obvious issue of exposing children to illegal activities, and it also contributes to their de-sensitivity to violence as they are exposed to these brutal and bloody scenes of animals ripping each other to pieces for money. Quite often, during a dog or cockfighting bust, these young runners are overlooked during the questioning process - which is part of what makes them desirable to use from an illegal animal fighter's standpoint.

December 10, 2007 Update: Michael Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison!
Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison and three years probation for his role in the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation and his participation in the brutal killing of several dogs that did not "perform well" in testing sessions.
During his sentencing the suspended football star apologized to the court and his family. However, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson told him, "You need to apologize to millions of young people who looked up to you". Judge Hudson called Vick's actions "cruel and inhumane" and said that Vick was a full partner in "Bad Newz Kennels" and was therefore equally culpable for all crimes committed. Two of Vick's codefendants; Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, received 18 and 21 months respectively. A sentencing hearing is still pending for the final codefendant, Tony Taylor.

Did you know? Aggression toward other dogs is not uncommon in all dog breeds... A famous German shepherd, Glen Johnson's OTCH "Avenger", UDTX, Am, UDT, SchH III, FH ("Sam") was described by Steve Robinson as "totally intolerant" of any other male dog near him unless under command. Sam has also been described as a totally friendly dog with people. As always, aggression directed at other dogs has nothing to do with a dog's soundness as a pet or working dog. Animal Fighting
Here are some steps to take if you suspect a neighbor or someone you know is involved in animal fighting:
  • Try to gather as much information while maintaining your own personal safety. Extremely dangerous people often run fighting rings and your own safety is just as important as the animals involved. Try to find out information such as: does the suspect have animals on the property, is he/she running animal fights on the property, does he/she have animal fighting equipment on the premises. Once your have gathered any information contact the local police department as well as your local animal control agency. Make sure to get the investigating officer/agent's name and badge/id number. In addition, make sure to ask what action will be taking place. When reporting animal fighting you want to follow up with the officer/agent to make sure action has been taken. If you are not getting responses from local authorities after multiple attempts, contact animal welfare groups who may be able to help, such as the Humane Society and PETA.

Virginia, home to Michael Vick's infamous dog fighting compound, is considering legislation to toughen state statutes against the "sport." The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is serving a federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to engaging in dog fighting at his Surrey, Virginia estate. Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell said he is backing efforts by the Humane Society of the United States to enact more effective animal fighting laws in Virginia. The legislation has been introduced in both chambers of the legislature and McDonnell said he expects speedy passage. "Last year Virginians learned, sadly, of the scope of animal fighting for sport and profit in the Commonwealth," McDonnell said. "We have found animal fighting in every region in Virginia. As the Attorney General of this state I believe we must do more to crack down on this inhumane blood sport."

A crackdown on dogfighting in North Carolina, where this photo was taken, has caused an increase here, some say.
Tougher laws on animal fighting sought By Chelyen Davis
Date published: RICHMOND In the wake of the highly publicized trial of Michael Vick for dogfighting, lawmakers this year are looking to strengthen the state's laws against animal fighting of any kind. Bills sponsored by House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith in the House and Sen. Tommy Norment in the Senateand backed by Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Gov. Tim Kaine and the Humane Societywould make cockfighting a felony, the same as dogfighting, and make it a misdemeanor to attend cockfights or dogfights. "Obviously the case involving Michael Vick helped shine a spotlight not only on the scope of the problem but on deficiencies in Virginia's law," McDonnell said at a press conference yesterday. "Until this case this year, people found it hard to understand the depravity" of dogfighting. Vick and three co-defendants were convicted this year on charges stemming from a dogfighting ring run out of Vick's Surry County property.

Anti-animal fighting legislation banning all fighting
    By Rob Richardson, NBC12 News
State lawmakers, the state attorney general, and animal advocates Tuesday endorsed legislation that would make all animal fighting in Virginia a felony. The legislation would also give police additional tools to investigate the crimes. Dog fighting is already a felony. This bill would make all animal fighting in Virginia a felony. Officials say the case against Michael Vick has helped to highlight the problem in Virginia. Calling it a blood sport, officials denounced animal fighting, and said new legislation aims to make cock fighting and other forms of animal fighting a felony. Cockfighting in Virginia, popular along the state's southern border, isn't illegal unless it's associated with gambling. Officials want to make even witnessing an animal fight a crime. Highlighting the popularity of dog fighting in Virginia, officials with the Humane Society revealed someone in eastern Henrico even publishes an underground dog fighting magazine. John Goodwin of the Humane Society says, “This is an undercover dog fighting publication chronicle fights that happen thruout the region and give people advice on conditioning dogs for fighting ... I think a lot of people would be shocked if they knew this sort of thing was being put together right here.”
