American football , known in the United States simply as football is a competitive team sport known for mixing complex strategy with intense physical play. The object of the game is to score points by advancing the pointed- oval shaped ball into the opposing team's end zone . The ball can be advanced by carrying it (a running play) or by throwing it to a teammate (a passing play). Points can be scored in a variety of ways, including carrying the ball over the goal line, catching a pass from beyond the goal line, tackling an opposing ball carrier in his own end zone, or kicking the ball through the goal posts on the opposing side. The winner is the team with the most points when time expires at the end of the last play. Outside the United States , the sport is referred to as American football (or a translation thereof) to differentiate it from other football codes. In Australia and New Zealand the game is known as

Ultimately, they want to gain enough ground to score a touchdown or field goal. In this article, you will learn about the field, the positions, and how points are scored, with a focus on professional football rules. We will also look at some basic techniques for the offense and defense. To learn more about football, read

The history of American football. How and when the game of football, known originally as soccer and rugby in England, came to America. Details of both college and pro levels.
HISTORY OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL Football historians, those who have studied the game and its origins, place the game’s beginnings in rugby, an English game played with many similarities to football. Rugby began in eighteen twenty-three at the famous Rugby Boys’ School in England. Another cousin of the game of football is soccer; its beginnings can also be traced to English origin, being played as early as the eighteen twenties. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: ITS BEGINNINGS At the same time, a group of students at Princeton began playing what was then known as ‘ballown’. First using their fists to advance the ball, and then their feet, this game consisted mainly of one goal: to advance the ball past the opposing team. There were no hard and fast rules applied to this earliest attempt at the game we now call football. At Harvard, the freshman and sophomore classes competed in a football-type game, played on the first Monday of each school year; this event came to be known as ‘Bloody Monday’ because of the roughness of the game. Pick up games, similar in style to that played on ‘Bloody Monday’, soon became popular on the Boston Common, catching on in popularity around eighteen sixty.

Introduction to American College Football Rules
American football grew out of the English game of rugby. Unlike soccer, the foot hardly ever touches the ball in American football. (Soccer is the game most of the world calls football.) The Field is 100 yards long (and 160 feet wide). The middle of the field is the 50 yard line. The lines are labeled every 10 yards descending in both directions from the 50 yard line. Thus there are two 40 yard lines and no 60 yard line. Each team owns half of the field (they switch sides every 15 minutes of play). Thus, the two 40 yard lines are distinguished by who owns them. The "zero yard line" is called the goal line. The areas to either side of those 100 yards, extending 10 yards past the goal lines, are called the end zones. Teams try to get the ball past the opponent's goal line into the end zone to score a touchdown. At far edge of each end zone are the goal posts which, together with the cross bar, look like a big H. These are used only when a team decides to kick a field goal instead of going for a touchdown or to kick for an extra point after scoring a touchdown. To score the field goal or extra point, the ball must go between the vertical posts and over the bar.

Sensitive boys with guitars who start bands at a young age are often pigeonholed with the loaded moniker "emo." Especially when those boys used to be in bands like Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc . But somehow (perhaps it's their use of the trumpet?), American Football avoids playing into tired old cliches about emo music. In fact, their heartfelt, delicately textured songs may win over even the most fervent anti-emo set.
American Football formed in Urbana, Illinois in 1997 after Mike Kinsella (ex- Cap'n Jazz Joan of Arc ) and Steve Lamos from The One Up Downstairs got together with solo artist Steve Holmes . In October, 1998, the trio released a three-song CD single on Polyvinyl Records . They toured briefly and then released a self-titled full-length in September 1999.
"Honestly?" from that album, is typical of American Football: all twinkly guitars and polyrhythms carefully and lovingly sculpted into a whirlwind of sounds and textures. But they shade their lilting melodies with an undercurrent of melancholy that adds depth without becoming maudlin.
Sadly, the members of

The AFA was founded in 1980 by Ronald J. Real under the name Minor Professional Football Association (MPFA). It's main function was to conduct an annual post-season championship tournament for teams calling themselves minor league. In the first year, five leagues joined the national association and sent their league champions to play in the first national play-off series ever conducted on this level of football. With eight teams making the play-offs (five league champions and three wild cards) there was a great interest renewed in the term "Minor League Football". Thinking his new national Association would develop along the lines of minor league baseball, ice hockey, and basketball, Real worked diligently to make people aware of the national association.

American Football Michael Billington: It is significant that on the death of Graham Greene in April 1991 Pinter praised him for his ability to look beyond political rhetoric at the reality of 'a tortured naked body'. Pinter's own obsession with the gulf between language and fact prompted him in August that same year to write a poem called 'American Football - A Reflection on the Gulf War'. It was rejected for publication by the Independent, the Observer, the Guardian (on the grounds it was 'a family newspaper'), the New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books . The last named, in particular, aroused Pinter's ire by accompanying rejection with the assurance that the poem had 'considerable force' and that it shared the author's views on the United States. Since the poem has been so little read and circulated, it is worth reproducing in full: American Football (English) American Football (Italian) American Football (Dutch) (A Reflection upon the Gulf War (Una riflessione sulla guerra del Golfo (kanttekeningen bij de Golfoorlog Hallelullah!
