Picture of the Week
The History Kokikai-Ryu Aikido founder Sensei Shuji Maruyama began his study of Aikido in 1955 under Koichi Tohei Sensei who was at the time chief instructor of Aikido under Master Ueshiba. Later after receiving an introduction from Tohei, Maruyama Sensei apprenticed directly with Master Ueshiba. Aikido was developed by the founder of Aikido Master Ueshiba in the samurai tradition of Budo. Master Ueshiba placed emphasis on maximizing human potential – emphasizing strength and efficiency through the coordination of mind and body. Through a special realization he was able to develop his potential power. The essence of his realization was that he discovered how to use only necessary strength. He understood his natural human ability and how to use that ability correctly and efficiently, and he applied his understanding to develop a system of new techniques that would eventually solidify into the art known as Aikido. The Refinement In the further development of Kokikai Aikido, Maruyama Sensei has stayed true to Master Ueshiba’s tradition and has refined the techniques to make Aikido more effective in modern circumstances. Maruyama Sensei has caught Ueshiba’s feeling for using only necessary strength, using the minimum effort necessary to achieve maximum results, but he now applies that feeling to technique responsive to the realities of modern unarmed fighting. Kokikai Aikido practice is characterized by realistic, focused attacks, and the fluid responses that employ timing and rhythm to take the opponents balance completely before the application of a throwing technique.

Emerald City Aikido
Aikido was founded
upon the idea that true victory in life involves winning over the discord with oneself. Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969), known to Aikido practitioners as O Sensei or "great teacher," developed the art in this century. Translated from Japanese, Aikido means "the way of harmonizing with nature's energy." It is also known as the art of peace. Aikido teaches harmony and balance in relation to the environment, others, and oneself. Underlying the physical practice of the art are universal principles. These principles embrace the ideas of non-violence and peace.

Introduction to Aikido
Morihei Ueshiba Aikido has a rich heritage as one of the most important and dynamic expressions of Japan's long martial arts tradition. Aikido is a graceful and sophisticated Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba around the turn of the century. Aikido is almost purely defensive; it teaches no kicks or punches and has relatively few aggressive moves. The central themes of Aikido are to learn to defend without vengeance, to forgive your enemies and to harmonize with any attack. By using the attacker's momentum, the Aikidoist takes the attacker's balance, controls his force, and ultimately neutralizes the attack. Aikido's lessons of physical and mental self-discipline can be applied throughout one's lifetime. The unique blending of form, utility, and ethics is responsible for Aikido's popularity today.
Tomiki Style of Aikido
Professor Kenji Tomiki Kenji Tomiki's style of Aikido resulted in a style that strives to combine the competitive excitement of Judo with the spiritual serenity of traditional Aikido.

... Contact Welcome to AIKIDO in Fredericksburg What is AIKIDO? AIKIDO is an effective, yet non-violent, traditional Japanese martial art. AIKIDO was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), a Japanese philosopher and master of kendo, spear-fighting, and jujitsu. O'Sensei (great teacher, as we refer to Ueshiba) was disillusioned with the endless cycle of violence and competition in the martial arts, so he designed AIKIDO as a discipline of personal refinement. Master Ueshiba taught the aikidoist to move with, rather than against, the attacker by drawing on our internal energy, or "ki". One’s goal in AIKIDO is to redirect the opponents' energy and neutralize an attack without harm. AIKIDO is non-competitive, taught in a cooperative manner, good exercise, and fun! Why do AIKIDO? The practice of AIKIDO is characterized by a clear extension of power, resulting in fluid, functional movements for effective, non-violent, self-defense. Most people, even athletes, find that AIKIDO is helpful in developing coordination and reflexes. Most important, AIKIDO can teach one how to deal with the stresses of daily living and acquire a general sense of well-being. The ultimate goal in AIKIDO is for the individual to develop mental, physical, and spiritual integration. BROADBAND USERS CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO ABOUT AIKIDO

Ai - Harmony, Love, Unity; to join or become one with. The word carries the feeling of the strength and power of natural forces. Ki - Spirit; Universal Breath, life force or vital energy; the essence of universal creative energy. Do Aikido is meant to create personal and social harmony. Along with the effectiveness of our techniques, we especially concentrate on developing this harmony in our daily practice. Aikido classes generally have a happy and relaxed atmosphere at all levels of training. While the sound of heavy falling and bodies rolling fill the dojo, we still experience joy, gentleness and a sense of trust with our partners. We train in Aikido to enjoy the nature of training. It is the opportunity to learn how to reconcile the conflicts in our lives which has attracted most of us to Aikido and has kept us training. Please join us at Aikido North Aikido North was founded in 1984 and is affiliated with the California Aikido Association (CAA) , under the guidance of Frank Doran Shihan .
