Aikido Eastside Adult Classes Kid's Classes Schedule Seminars ... Private Lessons Aikido Eastside offers daily classes for adults and children in the non-violent, non-competitive Japanese martial art of Aikido providing Mind, Body, Spirit integration as well as effective self defense. Aikido focuses on center to center connection and strives to allow one to defend without the necessity of seriously harming the attacker. The art developed in the mid 20th century as a gift to all mankind by Master Morihei Ueshiba , whom practitioners call "O Sensei" or revered teacher. The techniques of this art as taught to George Ledyard Sensei by his teacher Mitsugi Saotome Sensei focus on control and neutralization of an attack through harmonious movement and non-resistance. Since the unarmed techniques of Aikido originally derive from weapons techniques we train with the traditional weapons of sword and staff on a weekly basis. People train in Aikido for a number of reasons. It is a system of self defense and great exercise. In addition it is also a form of moving meditation with a strong spiritual underpinning and even serves as the model for various systems of conflict resolution. The emphasis on movement and redirection of force make Aikido the perfect martial art for those who are not physically large or powerful individuals. A ikido training will develop a relaxed and centered manner when facing conflict. It is a martial art which focuses on personal development as much as physical self defense and should prove useful in the every day lives of the students in a multitude of ways.

Transforming Conflict into Grace Aikido is a martial art dedicated to consciously transforming the way we manage conflict. In Aikido we learn to take down aggressors by working in harmony with their force. Through our practice, we also learn to cultivate greater harmony in our own bodies and spirits, and in our relationships with others and with the world. Through vigorous, challenging, and joyful martial training in a supportive group environment, we develop the resources to handle conflict (physical and otherwise) with grace, skill, calm strength, and compassion. Our style of Aikido is called Aikido Shusekai, which means Aikido for an Excellent World. The innovative teaching of Nick Walker Sensei and our other instructors is geared toward helping each student explore and develop his or her own natural strengths and potentials. We currently offer
classes in Berkeley
and Los Angeles Beginners are

Aikido is a non-violent, and non-competitive Japanese martial art which emphasizes blending, neutralizing, and controlling the force of an attack. Students are taught to relax, focus energy, concentrate and move in harmony with a partner. Negative power from an attack is not met with conflict, but joined, interpreted, and redirected through the power of spiral movement. Because Aikido does not depend on physical strength, it is especially attractive to men and women of all ages.

"Aikido is nonviolence. Every human being has been entrusted with a mandate from heaven, and the victory we seek is to overcome all challenges and fight to the finish, accomplishing our goals. In Aikido we never attack. If you want to strike first, to gain advantage over someone, that is proof your training is insufficient, and it is really you yourself who has been defeated. Let your partner attack, and use his aggression against him. Do not cower from an attack; control it before it begins. Nonviolence is the true practice of Aikido." Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido
Aikido: The Non-Violent Martial Art
The idea of a non-violent martial art seems at first to be paradoxical and self-contradictory. But in this respect, Aikido is perhaps the most unique and beautiful of all the martial arts: it is defensive and non-aggressive both in its philosophy and techniques, yet incredibly versatile and practical.
Aikidoists do not try to initiate attacks, win fights or defeat opponents. Instead, they seek to control and neutralize an attack not through sheer physical strength, but rather through flowing circular motions that blend with the energy of an attack and redirect that energy back against the attacker.

Please feel free to drop by and observe or particpate in any class. The first few weeks of the quarter are usually best as there are many beginners at that time, but really, you may start taking classes at any point.
If you have meeting or class that overlaps with our starting time, please feel free to come in and quietly observe. After class, let us know about your scheduling situation and we'll do our best to work something out. The only way to learn aikido is to participate. However, you may also find a discussion of the principles of aikido to be helpful in understanding what is happening on the mat. We look forward to training with you!

Articles Ultimate Martial Art? by George S. Ledyard Human beings are obsessed with conflict. Conflict attracts us just as a light will draw a moth into its orbit, even it ultimately means the destruction of the moth. Conflict of all sorts dominates our entertainment.
