Aiki Jujitsu ? What is it? Aiki Jujitsu, a traditional Japanese martial art, is the forefather of modern Aiki styles and martial arts such as Aikido, Judo and Hapkido. Aiki Jujitsu students learn to avoid conflict whenever possible. They also learn to take control of difficult situations and to eliminate the threat to their personal safety when violence is unavoidable. Rather than meeting force with force, students learn the use of circular motion and redirection of an attacker's energy. This helps neutralize the attacker?s size/strength advantage. A wide variety of techniques are taught to prepare students for a broad range of situations including everything from the basic bully to knife and gun attacks. Aiki Ju-JUtsu THE ORIGINS OF AIKI JU-JUTSU It is believed that the traditional Japanese martial art Daitoryu originated within the family of Emperor Seiwa who reigned from 858 to 876 AD. In the eleventh century, a descendent named Shinra Saburo Minamoto no Yoshimitsu advanced the art through the study of human anatomy. He dissected the bodies of war dead and executed criminals to develop effective strikes, holds and joint locks which he incorporated into his family's martial art. His eldest son, Yoshikiyo, moved to the village of Takeda in Koma and there the Daitoryu tradition was handed down within the Takeda family for generations. Near the end of the 16th century, Kunitsugu Takeda moved the family's main base to the Aizu district. There the art of Daitoryu was secretly taught to the Samurai until the fall of the Shogunate in 1868. It was Sokaku Takeda, in the 19th century, who began teaching Daitoryu to the public. He was born in 1860 and learned Daitoryu from his relatives and from the last minister of the Aizu region - Tanomo Sigo (1830 - 1905). Sokaku Takeda had also studied other martial arts and he incorporated his knowledge of these plus his practical experience into the Daitoryu which he taught to select groups of military officers, police officials and aristocrats. Although he had many students (some estimates are as high as 30, 000), he issued approximately 20 formal teaching licenses.

Contact Info Information on Aiki Ju Jitsu Ju Jitsu was the unarmed combat system used by the samurai in feudal Japan. Different parts of Japan practiced different systems, and a variety of styles developed. In addition, many notable Ju Jitsu practitioners went on to develop and found their own arts. Fundamentally, Karate, Judo, Aikido, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are all developed specializations of Ju Jitsu. Kano Jigoro (the founder of Judo) and Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Aikido) both studied Ju Jitsu before founding their own arts. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded by the Gracie brothers, who learned from Mitsuyo Maeda, who was a student of Kano Jigoro. Karate is a more distant cousin, as it was primarily developed in Okinawa and has a more pronounced Chinese influence. In his youth he loved boxing and wrestling. In 1941, Duke became a student of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu under Ray Law at the University Ave dojo in Oakland, CA. Ray Law was a blackbelt under Seishiro Okazaki of Hawaii, the founder of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. Duke excelled at judo and jujitsu, and learned the Kodenkan "boards" (requirements for blackbelt written on woodern boards which hung in the dojo), but was not satisfied with all aspects of the system. Thus, in 1943, he decided to go to New York City and study judo with George Yoshida. While living in New York City, he also used all his spare time to train with jujitsu master Kiyose Nakae. Nakae gave Moore private lessons on two tatami mats in the master's apartment. In 1944, Duke finally won his blackbelt in competition, and it was awarded to him by George Yoshida.
