Martial Aiki - Past and Present Written by James Williams An excerpt from an article published in the Aikido JOURNAL "Nature knows but one kind of justice, the inevitable conformity of results to causes." In modern language we use the term martial arts for a number of disciplines that are based to some degree or another on various Samurai methods of war and personal combat. There are differences in the interpretation of the term martial art depending upon whether the art is Budo or bujutsu. Although Aikido has its technical base in the Daito ryu Aiki ju jutsu of Takeda Sokaku, it is most decidedly a Do art in it's philosophy, application and execution of technique. Spiritual, moral, and physical edification are esteemed as higher priorities than absolute combat function. This very much reflects Ueshiba Sensei's personal philosophy as well as the prevailing political and social climate of Japan following World War ll. In a classical Bujutsu, weapons ability and technique were of prime importance and most of the training centered on this. The empty hand techniques that come down to us from the classical era are for the most part based in weapons movements primarily those of the sword. These techniques of striking, throwing, grappling, strangling, joint locking, and escaping were learned to facilitate the use of the sword or other weapon when the bushi was encumbered by his opponent in such a way as to prevent the free use of his weapons. This also applied if the bushi for some reason did not have access to those weapons. The classical warrior needed a wide range of military skills and did not limit or narrow his training leaving out valuable knowledge that would hinder his victory in combat.

A million years ago, the world’s first identifiable hominid sat down and ate his meal. He then hit the world’s second Homo erectus on the head with a rock and took his food. And thus, with the crushing of a mere 800 cc’s of brain tissue, came ego, "self", and the concept of self-dominating not-self. During the next million years or so, the theory of personal conflict changed but little: direct application of force to yield direct, immediate, and personally beneficial results. Somewhere and somewhen, however, some unknown person came up with a new idea: apply the force indirectly and wait a bit for the results. While this required both patience and rational thought, it also resulted in what is now referred to as more bang for the buck—a small input of energy, properly applied, yielding rather spectacular results. Initial successes lead to further research. The major difficulty with this new methodology was that it was so darned difficult. While a simple thump on the head with a blunt instrument worked quite nicely in the direct method, a lot more precision was required when applying force indirectly. Still, over the centuries and the millennia, probably more by chance than by design, some successes were achieved. And, in comparison with the older, direct, methods of applying force, these new indirect techniques must have seemed almost magical.
