LISA BANSAVAGE portrays the
Mother of Modern Dance * in * Isadora,
American Legend by Jerry James and Ann Beigel
New York actress Lisa Bansavage stars in Isadora, American Legend , the triumphant story of a maverick feminist and visionary artist whose unwavering sense of aesthetics and social justice defied contemporary artistic and political conventions. Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) revolutionized the world of dance with a creative approach that opened the way for individual expression in this most tradition-bound of the performing arts. Her sexual openness and unabashed reverence for the female body scandalized a puritanical public while establishing her as a heroine to those who recognized the implications of her daring innovations. Isadora, American Legend is a riveting enactment of how one woman overcame family problems, personal tragedy and professional obstacles to win universal acclaim as the Mother of Modern Dance.

Hilary M. Lips Let me begin by saying how very pleased and honored I am to be here and to be a part of the process of looking at the very important issues surrounding women in education. I offer my thanks to Dorothy Meyer, who spearheaded this visit, and to all of you for your hospitality.
Two years ago, a young woman in my social psychology class wrote a short essay in response to my assignment to write something about "violating a social norm". Here is a portion of what she wrote: During my second semester ... I chose my major as chemistry/Pre-pharmacy, not realizing that I was going against the "rules" of what men and women should study. I am young, female, and fairly attractive. For some reason, people find it amazing that I chose my field of study, and even hold it against me.

Media Center This case study, the second in a series on women-centered health programs prepared for FHI's Women's Studies Project, profiles two programs in Bolivia: La Casa de la Mujer in Santa Cruz and the Kumar Warmi (Health Woman) clinic operated by the Centro de Informacion y Desarrollo de la Mujer (CIDEM) in El Alto. Both programs involve women in the design and delivery of health care, and both offer health care as one of an array of services designed to improve women's quality of life. The La Casa program is action-oriented and works to empower women as individuals and to build solidarity among women from all classes of society. CIDEM's Kumar Warmi project works to transform health care through educational processes; it has a strong basis in gender theory.

Medieval Women and Music
Cynthia J. Cyrus Last modified on October 15, 1999
Introduction
Women's involvement with medieval music took a variety of forms; they served at times as audience, as participant, as sponsor, and as creator. The evidence for their roles, like that for their male contemporaries, is sporadic at best. Many musical sources have been lost, and those sources that do survive only occasionally provide composer attributions. Information on specific performances is virtually non-existent, and the references to musical performances gleaned from literary allusions must be read critically. Similarly, an art-work portraying a women musician may be representational or symbolicor both. Yet despite these handicaps, modern scholarship reveals many ways in which medieval women were engaged withand enriched bythe music that flourished around them.

Egeria: An Early Witness
[W]hen the first cock has crowed, forthwith the bishop descends and enters inside of the cave to the Anastasis (the sanctuary). All the doors are opened, and the whole crowd streams into the Anastasis. Here innumerable lights are shining; and when the people have entered, one of the priests says a psalm, and they all respond; then prayer is offered. Again one of the deacons says a psalm, and again prayer is offered; a third psalm is said by one of the clergy, and prayer is offered for the third time, and the commemoration of all men is made....
