Urban and Regional Planning Programs The Urban Planning programs offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in urban and regional planning. Both degree programs are professionally accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board.
Our undergraduate program is one of twelve accredited programs nationally, while our MURP degree is one of only four accredited programs in the Pacific Northwest. We also provide planning research and technical assistance to communities and tribal governments within the region. Our undergraduate program is built around the functional areas: community development, land use planning, environmental planning, transportation planning, urban design, and economic development.
Our MURP program has emphasis areas in environmental planning, planning administration, small town planning, and tribal planning in our graduate program. Our Department is active in applied research and community service. In addition, our Department has received funding from the Department of Transportation to operate the Northwest Tribal Local Technical Assistance Program (TTAP), providing training and technical assistance in transportation, planning, tourism and economic development to over 50 tribes in the Pacific Northwest. We are glad to serve you through our homepage.

Field of Study: Urban and Regional Planning
Degree(s) Offered: BA, MURP, Minor
Location(s) Offered: Spokane, WA
Program Website: Department of Urban Planning, Public and Health Administration Many social, physical, economic, technical, and political issues in society cry out for definition and resolution. Among these are: decline in central cities, deterioration of neighborhoods, inefficient and inequitable taxing and regulation policies, congestion and other problems of accessibility, the impact of growth and change, an erosion of natural resources including water, land, and air, and inefficient or absent human services. Urban and regional planning is one of society’s means for addressing these problems in a creative, positive manner. Planning is a problem-solving profession that is concerned with the forces that influence the quality of life in the neighborhood, city, region, state, nation, and world. Thus, planning provides a unique occupational avenue for those who desire a role in shaping a better future. The goal of Eastern’s program in Urban and Regional Planning is to train competent professionals for careers in planning. To achieve this goal, the department stresses the acquisition of practical, analytical and organizational skills designed to aid the student in analyzing problems and organizing community activities to help solve problems. The combination of classroom instruction and applied planning field projects develops professional competence and insures that each student has the requisite abilities to function within the profession after leaving the program. The department takes particular pride in having the only accredited undergraduate planning degree in the Northwest and one of only 11 in the nation.

Geographers often work as planners to ensure that communities develop in an orderly way, along with the services necessary to support them. Planners must be able to develop building plans for subdivisions and housing projects. They need to understand all the factors that affect the value of land and real estate. Planning is a rapidly expanding field, and geographers are filling a great many jobs. Planning courses teach students how to prepare master plans that will benefit neighborhoods, communities, cities, and regions. Support courses include material on the geography of population, transportation, social services, utilities, and solid-waste-disposal systems. Other topics include resource planning, land-use planning, and the delivery of municipal services (which involves the planning of police patrol routes, the location of firehouses and emergency medical services, and ways of making school bus routes shorter and more efficient).
Urban and Community Planner
Urban and community planners work to make cities pleasant and attractive places in which to live and work, taking into account zoning, traffic patterns, building density, recreational facilities, and the management of waste materials and water. They try to organize streets and the flow of traffic to avoid congestion. They try to plan for recreation so that everyone will have access to parks and open spaces. Planners work closely with builders to make sure that cities develop within the limits of the master plan. They need lots of geographical information to do all this. Most planners have bachelor's or higher degrees, and some have to pass a national exam. Urban and regional planning programs are available at some universities. Often, students take courses in public administration or public finance, as well as geography.

Since its inception in 2003, the Urban and Regional Planning program in the National Capital Region has grown from nine students to nearly 90, from five courses to a full suite, and from two faculty members to six including professors in practice. Two years ahead of schedule, we also launched a doctoral program. These are exciting times to build a new planning program, especially in the National Capital Region, the nation’s fourth largest metropolitan area and fastest growing among those of more than five million people.
