Urban and regional planning
Urban and Regional Planning is about effectively managing the shared spaces in which people live, work and play, whether this be in large regions and cities, or smaller towns, suburbs and neighbourhoods. Planning is particularly concerned with ensuring that places cater for different groups and individuals fairly, efficiently and sustain ably, and that our cities and towns provide for a range of opportunities for those who need them. Ensuring that our cities and towns are more ecologically sustainable, socially just and economically productive is at the heart of urban and regional planning practice. Planners come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and are usually interested in research and in analysing the way places change over time. They also need to be willing to challenge and question the way our cities and regions are currently designed and managed with a view to recognising what needs to be maintained and what needs to be changed.

The Urban Planning programs offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in urban and regional planning. Both degree programs are professionally accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board.
Our undergraduate program is one of twelve accredited programs nationally, while our MURP degree is one of only four accredited programs in the Pacific Northwest. We also provide planning research and technical assistance to communities and tribal governments within the region. Our undergraduate program is built around the functional areas: community development, land use planning, environmental planning, transportation planning, urban design, and economic development.
Our MURP program has emphasis areas in tribal planning, environmental planning, small town planning, and planning administration in our graduate program. Our Department is active in applied research and community service. In addition, our Department has received funding from the Department of Transportation to operate the Northwest Tribal Local Technical Assistance Program (TTAP), providing training and technical assistance in transportation, planning, tourism and economic development to over 50 tribes in the Pacific Northwest. We are glad to serve you through our homepage. ASP Meeting:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Planners formulate plans and policies to meet social, economic, and physical needs and they devise ways to make the plans work. Planners play a number of roles – technical analysts, researchers, designers, program developers, agents of social change, managers, and educators. Planning has many dimensions, almost too numerous to mention here. The most popular specializations are the following: land use planning, policy planning and management, transportation planning, housing and community development, health and human services development, historic preservation planning, economic and resource development planning, environmental planning, third world development planning, natural hazards and emergency planning, and urban design and physical planning. Most planners today work for city, county, or regional planning agencies, although states and the Federal government also employ planners in their various departments and bureaus. One such Federal agency is the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A number of opportunities in private business and research organizations exist. Businesses such as banks, industrial firms, service and retail activities, airline companies, utilities, and other firms which deal with locational issues need the services of planners. At the international level, organizations such as the Agency for International Development (AID) and the World Bank hire planners particularly for research and work on developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses for those entering the urban and regional planning profession. These are the only courses in Western Australia accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia. A distinguishing characteristic of these courses is the use of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques in addressing environmental, social and design issues concerning the community. It is now widely accepted that successful human settlements must be properly planned and a range of statutory and non-statutory controls exist at all levels of government to protect the public interest in the development process. The involvement of individuals and community groups in the preparation and implementation of plans is now considered vital to successful development outcomes.
The Department also is strongly engaged in research on Urban and Regional Planning. A major individual research report forms part of all taught courses. Doctoral Research Students enrolled in the Departmetn are investigating topics such as planning theory, heritage, legal appeals and environmental planning. Staff are actively involved in research institutes and centres concerned with transport planning, housing , coastal planning and tourism.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning forms part of the Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design
