The goal of city and regional planning is to further the welfare of people and their communities by creating convenient, equitable, healthful, efficient, and attractive environments for present and future generations. Planning is city building. Planners plan within a highly collaborative process. Through this collaborative process they help to define the community's vision for itself. Working with local residents, politicians, and special groups, planners help establish the vision. Planners work with many types of communities — small villages, large cities, suburban towns, even counties, states, and federal agencies. This vision is created not only from what the community members want, but based on an understanding of the problems and resources at hand. The planner provides this analysis and helps the community look at the options it has for development and change. Through the analytical planning process, planners consider the physical, social and economic aspects of communities and examine the connections between them. Professionally trained planners also analyze the existing conditions and future trends in the area. They analyze issues such as transportation, land use, housing, recreation and open space, natural and cultural resources, community services, population, and economic development. In addition to generating their own data, planners draw upon the work of others to create a comprehensive overview of the community. Once planners have conducted their analysis, they develop strategic alternatives for solving problems in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. These alternatives will guide future development based on the established goals and the systematic analysis.

Welcome and thank you for visiting the
Department of Urban and Regional Planning web site.
The program in urban and regional planning was established at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1965 to prepare professional planners for leadership positions in public agencies and in the private sector. The Department offers an intensive 48 credit-hour program leading to the Master of Science in Planning (MSP) degree. Since 1965, the Department has produced some of the most successful and influential planning professionals in the nation. Alumni of the Department hold a variety of professional positions throughout the United States and in several foreign nations. The University of Tennessee planning program is a Master's-level practitioner- oriented program with an excellent national and international reputation. The program's high-quality and small size affords students a rich, stimulating and challenging environment. The structure of the program is based on the premise that the planner should possess a set of skills adaptable to varied tasks and employment settings. These settings include the traditional land-use/land-development emphasis but extend to such concerns as environmental planning, economic development, transportation, analytical methods, and regional planning and real estate development. Through specialization in elective course work, students in the program may focus their studies in one these areas or in a student-designed specialization approved by the faculty.

Urban and regional planning invites 600 alumni to visit
On the University of Iowa campus, a new president, Howard R. Bowen, was about to be inaugurated after the 20-year term of his predecessor, Virgil M. Hancher, came to an end. Urban and regional planning, MacDonald explains, offers a range of interesting challenges for graduates. Planners develop and implement public policies in such areas as transportation, economic development, neighborhood planning, land use, the environment, and housing. Their employers range from state and federal government to environmental organizations to private consulting firms. David Forkenbrock, professor of urban and regional planning and director of the UI Public Policy Center, joined the faculty in 1978. He says the department graduated its first students by 1968 and got through most of the 1970s by appointing temporary faculty. Now the department has nine full-time professors and four adjunct instructors, and an average of 50 students a year.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Our Department is situated in the College of Design, Construction, and Planning which also accommodates the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Interior Design, as well as the School of Architecture and the Rinker School of Building Construction. We have an interdisciplinary faculty and research record! Many relationships between individual disciplines within the college and around the University are mutually beneficial; urban planning faculty and students are involved in various interdisciplinary research projects. We have an interdisciplinary faculty that recognizes the value of team building - planners working with and leading interdisciplinary teams that solve complex planning research projects and "real world" problems. We select research projects that expand the horizon of planning theory and provide students with a “hands on” environment within which to study and grow as professional planners. Paul D. Zwick
