Sociology
Sociology, the scientific study of human social behavior. As the study of humans in their collective aspect, sociology is concerned with all group activities: economic, social, political, and religious. Sociologists study such areas as bureaucracy, community, deviant behavior, family, public opinion, social change, social mobility, social stratification, and such specific problems as crime, divorce, child abuse, and substance addiction. Sociology tries to determine the laws governing human behavior in social contexts.

Introduction to the Department of Religious Studies
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies at CSU, Chico. Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines religious ideas, symbols, practices, and institutions from the perspectives of history, textual studies, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and other disciplines. Our program is cross-cultural and comparative, and highlights the complex relationship of religion to other areas of culture. In addition to courses exploring the development of all the major religious traditions of the world, we offer courses that probe the role of religion in ethics and law, gender constructs, literature, the visual arts, and a variety of contemporary social and political issues. The Department has grown from its establishment in 1974 to a Department of 13 active scholars working in many areas of the discipline. We offer programs of study leading to a BA or minor in Religious Studies, and a minor in Ethics. Browse our website for information on courses, faculty, on- and off-campus resources, and information about careers and graduate school in Religious Studies. Our award-winning faculty consistently earn the highest marks for quality teaching and student-faculty encounters. We invite you to drop by the Department for a meeting with the academic advisor or any member of the faculty. They will be happy to talk with you about what they teach and what excites them about our field.

Welcome
Document Actions Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Founded in 1920 by Howard W. Odum, our department has played a prominent role in the development of sociology as a major field of study in the social sciences. Several years after founding the department, Odum also founded Social Forces , a journal that continues to play a leading role in the dissemination of groundbreaking social research. Since the 1930s, when we were judged "distinguished" by the American Council of Education, we have been regarded as among the most productive, innovative, and respected sociology departments in the United States. Current and past faculty members have been important figures in regional, national, and international social science, including Peter Blau, Hubert Blalock, Glen Elder, Amos Hawley, Gerhard Lenski, and Tony Oberschall. Seven former members of our department and alumni have served as presidents of the American Sociological Association. We invite you to explore the department through the website. Our Purpose
    Our Past
Founded in 1976, the AHS emerged from our realization that conventional mainstream sociology was unresponsive to people, their needs, concerns and values. We came together not out of shared politics or similar "schools" of sociology, but out of a common concern for the real life problems of equality, peace and social justice. We share a commitment to address all facets of the human condition in our scholarship and in our practice, and to make sociology more relevant to human needs. These are perilous times. Crises confront human beings in the United States and around the globe. Humanist sociologists strive as professionals, as scholars and as activists to uncover and address social issues, working with oth ers to lessen the pain of social problems. We view people not merely as products of social forces, but also as shapers of social life, capable of creating social orders in which everyone's potential can unfold. Difficult times give humanist sociologists opportunities to apply their special skills and perspectives for the purpose of creating a more humane world.
