The Global Social Change Research Project
The basic question of interest is "Why does society develop the way that it does?" How did the various political systems develop, how do different customs and social systems come about. Some specific topics include: what is globalization and how is it happening, why did industrialization first occur in Europe, how far will democratization spread and in what forms. This site is our attempt to study those questions. We present information that looks at long term, large scale changes in social, political and economic systems at the national and international levels. This site presents links to sites with theories, approaches, data and research. The principal aim is to present information that can be used to explain historical change, growth and development. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Send email to gsociology at yahoo dot com

129. Thoughts On Social Issues
An article with a Christian perspective on the social and moral problems that confront society.
http://www.webguy-prod.com/stimpfam/mike/social.html
Thoughts On Social Issues
For some time, I have watched the Christian media address social and moral issues. For some time, I have been bothered by what I see. The issues themselves are troubling, but that is not what distresses me. We must address the current problems of society if the church is to fulfill its role, so it doesn't trouble me that the Christian media addresses these issues. What they say about social issues doesn't bother me, either. It is usually excellent. It's what they don't say that disturbs me. For example, a couple of years ago I checked a dozen or so articles and editorials on social and moral problems in four issues of Christianity Today . (Lest you think that I am picking on Christianity Today , the same could be said of Focus On The Family radio broadcasts, or a number of others in the Christian media.) Most of the articles described a social or moral problem, analyzed it from the perspective of Christian values and ethics, and presented several specific things we can do to address the problem. The perspectives were very good. The ideas for action were excellent, ranging from ways of effectively pressuring politicians to ways of demonstrating to people that their position is wrong without arguing. From the emphasis of these articles (and broadcasts), however, I subtly reach a larger conclusion: "That's all there is to it; if enough of us look at these issues correctly and do these things in response, we can eliminate these problems."

Next Social Phobia: The Largest Anxiety Disorder Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) is defined as the fear (anxiety) of being judged, criticized, and evaluated by other people. This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them.
