BPD Online
Home Welcome! President's Welcome Welcome to the BPD web page! Our mission is to support excellence in baccalaureate social work education. I am honored to serve as President of BPD because I believe it is a vital contributor to the education of competent social work practitioners. For over 20 years we have worked to carry out our mission, during that time developing an excellent journal, JBSW, to provide an outlet for scholarship about baccalaureate education; a wonderful newsletter, Update, to provide us with information about the ongoing activities of BPD; one of the best conferences available to social work educators; a Web site and a list-serve that allow us to share information and ideas; and a mentoring program to help new Program Directors find support as they begin their jobs. We are linked with other organizations and coalitions such as ANSWER CSWE GADE IASWR ... NASW , the National Gerontology Leadership Coalition and SSWR , to enhance our knowledge base and provide advocacy for social work education and research. We also have an excellent Program Coordinator, Kristine Moreno, who manages the day-to-day operations and provides a central location for information.

What is Forensic Social Work?
Forensic social work is the application of social work to questions and issues relating to law and legal systems. This specialty of our profession goes far beyond clinics and psychiatric hospitals for criminal defendants being evaluated and treated on issues of competency and responsibility. A broader definition includes social work practice which in any way is related to legal issues and litigation, both criminal and civil. Child custody issues, involving separation, divorce, neglect, termination of parental rights, the implications of child and spouse abuse, juvenile and adult justice services, corrections, and mandated treatment all fall under this definition.
Can any social worker be a forensic social worker?

A Message from the SSWLHC President-Elect:
The devastation from Hurricane Katrina has inexorably changed us. At a personal level, we have heard from a number of Society members directly affected by the hurricane, and we are grateful to learn that they are safe. If you hear from anyone, please let us know so that we can reach out and communicate with our friends and colleagues. Many of our members are working in their local communities to help mobilize resources in their area for the displaced hurricane victims. Others are volunteering time, expertise, money, and unique support. Please take care of yourselves as well, as you help victims pick up the pieces and rebuild their world. We would appreciate knowing any efforts in which our members are involved, so that we can honor and tell the stories. You can contact us through e-mail
Richard Woodrow
President-Elect A Message from the SSWLHC President:
Dear SSWLHC Members,
As I mentioned in my previous email, we want to keep you up to date with information re: ways in which we might be of help to all those affected by the tragic aftermath of Katrina. Below you will find a page on the AHA web site where professionals may register to help or learn of ways to help through the many health care organizations which have joined forces to provide assistance to those affected. There is no obligation in going to this site, but so often, those of us who are far removed from the actual disaster site and wish we could do something to help. So for those who might be interested, here is one way to find out if there is some way you might be able to help.
