Concentration in Science and Society

What do I do after graduation?
2005-2006 Course Offerings Student Work

As of November 2004, Science and Society is a regular concentration. Curriculum Consisting of 12 courses, the program of study outlined below will be developed by each student in consultation with the concentration advisor ( Anne Fausto-Sterling Required Courses (2)
The proposed course of study would be book-ended by two required courses.
  • SC 49: Introduction to Science Studies, or equivalent introductory course ( 2005-06 syllabus Senior Seminar, also open to non-majors with the proper background, will begin in Fall 2006.
Thematic Track (3)
Having completed UC49, students will select one thematic track from which they will select three courses:

* Independent Focus ( sample track Science Track (4) Students will take a minimum of four courses in one of the scientific areas listed below. These courses will be sequenced such that a concentrator will move enough beyond the introductory level to gain some understanding of the world view of scientists within a chosen field. The particular sequence of courses which best meets the science requirement will be chosen in consultation with the concentration advisor. When necessary, the concentration advisor will seek `guidance from faculty within the chosen science field.

Reform in engineering education has become an object of intense interest and desire in countries throughout the world. What is at stake in the contents of education for engineers, and for whom?
This first workshop of the International Network for Engineering Studies (INES), sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation and Virginia Tech, will bring together researchers on the history, social and cultural studies, and philosophy of engineering education to address these questions by placing them in wider historical and cultural contexts.

Constructivism in Science and Technology Studies and Beyond?
Report on the conference of the GWTF (German Society for Science and Technology Studies), Berlin, November 26-27 2004. As researchers in science and technology studies we have become comfortable with constructivism. The provocative charm of a concept aligning epistemic practices with everyday ones and disputing the claim of exceptionality of scientific knowledge eventually faded away, however. Meanwhile we have accepted that scientific knowledge is not the result of discovery but of a process of construction situated in laboratories. The omnipresence of the term ‘construction,’ however, signifies that there are ambiguities to be analysed in the discourse of science and technology studies. What are the consequences to draw from this situation? Are we currently observing a change of paradigms? An all-embracing answer to the question of the “after” is impossible and was not the main emphasis of the organization team. The focus was much more on screening the present debate and investigating new programmatic territory. The wealth of questions thrown up demonstrated that the provocation of the central question achieved its aim. Obviously, the question hits a nerve in science and technology studies. The intention is to publish a selection of contributions in the newly established Internet-forum. Science, Technology and Innovation-Studies (STI-Studies).

    About STS
Science and Technology Studies explores the relationship between science, technology, and society using a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. Research in STS analyzes how society affects the development and implementation of scientific, technological, and medical knowledges and practices and how scientific, technological, and medical pursuits affect society. The research and scholarly interests of STS faculty cross a wide range of disciplinary boundaries: some rely on fieldwork, others are immersed in historical or governmental archival research, while others develop social and conceptual analyses to answer theoretical or ethical questions. Graduate students in STS come from a wide range of backgrounds including the natural and physical sciences, engineering, numerous professional disciplines, liberal arts and humanities, history, anthropology, sociology, political science, and philosophy. Graduates emerge with an ability to identify and examine the conceptual, social, cultural, historical, and policy dimensions of science and technology. Courses leading to an M.S. or a Ph.D. in STS are available at two sites, Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg and the Northern Virginia Center (NVC) in the greater D.C. metro area.

Science and Technology Studies (STS) integrates knowledge about science, technology, and medicine with society, culture, and the economy. This interdisciplinary field of study incorporates a broad base of scholarship to provide a nuanced picture of science and technology as human enterprises, situated in wider historical, social, and cultural contexts.
Ph.D. Minor in STS
The Science and Technology Studies (STS) program does not offer graduate degrees, but students who are candidates for the Ph.D. degree in another department or program may obtain an Option A minor in STS. The STS Ph.D. minor provides graduate students with an integrated program of interdisciplinary training in Science and Technology Studies. The minor is open to students in all campus departments, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. The program is oriented towards helping students use insights from STS in their research and teaching. Graduate students will choose, in consultation with the Director of the STS Program, an advisor from among the Program's faculty. The advisor will assist in planning the student's program of education.

Science and Technology Studies STS ) is a full degree program and research unit located within the interdisciplinary School of Analytic Studies and Information Technology . STS is dedicated to analyzing science and technology, their development, and their impact on society. What is science? How does it affect society? How does society affect the development of science, the concepts, and metaphors it deploys, and the kinds of knowledge it produces? How do theories change in science? How are scientific controversies opened, sustained, closed? What distinguishes science from non-science? What are the relations between science and technology? In addressing such questions, STS adopts a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches and insights drawn from scholarly work in the history, philosophy, and social studies of science and technology. Interdisciplinary studies of science and technology represent one of the fastest growing academic fields, with major centres in the United States, Europe, and Australia. Science and Technology Studies at Atkinson is unique in Canada. Focusing primarily on science and technology in the 19th and 20th centuries, it offers two degree streams: B.A. (including Honors) in

What is Science and Technology Studies?
Students and scholars in the field of science and technology studies want to know how scientific knowledge is produced. We believe that the idealized accounts of knowledge production entrenched in our scientific belief system are inadequate, given the complexity of the process they claim to describe. STS scholars seek to understand how science operates by analyzing historical case studies, observing contemporary scientists at work, examining representations of scientific ideas in textbooks or journals, and studying the infrastructure of scientific institutions. This interdisciplinary field brings together anthropologists, philosophers, historians, art historians, literary theorists, sociologists and practicing scientists.
