Introduction to the Department of Religious Studies
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies at CSU, Chico. Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines religious ideas, symbols, practices, and institutions from the perspectives of history, textual studies, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and other disciplines. Our program is cross-cultural and comparative, and highlights the complex relationship of religion to other areas of culture. In addition to courses exploring the development of all the major religious traditions of the world, we offer courses that probe the role of religion in ethics and law, gender constructs, literature, the visual arts, and a variety of contemporary social and political issues. The Department has grown from its establishment in 1974 to a Department of 13 active scholars working in many areas of the discipline. We offer programs of study leading to a BA or minor in Religious Studies, and a minor in Ethics. Browse our website for information on courses, faculty, on- and off-campus resources, and information about careers and graduate school in Religious Studies. Our award-winning faculty consistently earn the highest marks for quality teaching and student-faculty encounters. We invite you to drop by the Department for a meeting with the academic advisor or any member of the faculty. They will be happy to talk with you about what they teach and what excites them about our field.

Requirements Course Descriptions Jan Plan Courses ... Research Guides T he academic study of religion at Colby focuses upon the origins and historical development of several of the world's major religious traditions with the goal of enabling students to understand and appreciate religious diversity in the modern world. Although Religious Studies is a small department at Colby, we are able to include within our curriculum courses that explore Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto and thus represent a considerable exposure to complex and varied religious traditions. Occasionally we are able to expand the scope of our inquiry further. A study of Judaism and Christianity provides students with a deep knowledge of the development of our own culture and its heritage. Similarly, learning about Asian religions is crucial for understanding the culture of India, China, Japan and other Asian countries, including those located in the area often described as the "Middle East." We also intend to expose students to a variety of methods in Religious Studies. Thus, in our courses, students learn to study religious traditions by scrutinizing their literary traditions, archaeological remains, rituals, texts, and their effects in and upon society. The study of religion teaches people to think clearly, critically, and cross-culturally about ways in which human beings have understood the world and their role in it.

133. Department Of Religious Studies - Michigan State University
Michigan State University Department of religious studies.
http://www.msu.edu/user/religstu/
The Department of Religious Studies The academic study of religion seeks to describe and interpret the nature of religion and the variety of religious worldviews. In doing so, it draws on the disciplines and interdisciplinary methodologies of the humanities and social sciences. The study of religious worldviews approaches religion comparatively in a cross-cultural context. Moreover, it tries to understand the multiple dimensions of religion: religious texts, myths, doctrines, and rituals; religion and ethics, religious institutions and religious experience. The study of religion explores the changes religious traditions have undergone over time. In addition, it is interested in the economic and intellectual contexts within which religions have unfolded. This includes an examination of various critiques of and challenges to traditional religions. The academic study of religion is open, that is to say unhampered by the boundaries and limiations that have been the norm in the denominational or doctrinally oriented teaching of religious worldviews.

Religious Studies Department Inviting, and expecting, students to begin to look at issues from a new perspective "It is the duty of every
cultured man and woman to read sympathetically the scriptures of the world. If we are to respect others' religions as we would have them respect our own, a friendly study of the world's religions is a sacred duty."
Mohandas Gandhi
Contact Information: Virginia Wesleyan College 1584 Wesleyan Dr. Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA.23502 Welcome! The subject matter we teach is religious studies, and there are certain minimum facts which we hope students will learn. Students should be familiar with some places, some events, some dates, and some names. Without a knowledge of facts, students are unable to see strengths or weaknesses, they are unable to see trends, analogies, causes, or effects, they cannot begin to place their owns lives within a broader perspective. But when we teach, we are not only teaching facts. We teach a process of thinking; inviting and expecting students to begin to look at issues from a new perspective. We want students, for instance, to know why and how certain concepts, movements, or issues developed. We want them to come to some sort of conclusions about how Jesus and the Pharisees really were opponents, about how Christians and Muslims are truly different, about how the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Matthew disagree. We want students to learn to be fair about intellectual issues. In terms of Jesus and the Pharisees, what would Jesus see as the similarities and differences between him and them? What would the Pharisees emphasize? What would they agree on? In what activities could Christians and Muslims not participate together? How would the authors of the Gospels of Mark and Matthew disagree? How are we to understand their similarities? How do contexts shape rhetoric, actions, and thought?
